So, a little detour for the last 11 months ... into the "old" world of Fiber-Metal-Fiber Laminates, with the goal of reducing Carbon Fiber Content, maintaining CF/E equivalency for Strength/Stiffness while reducing cost and improving damping with relation to a CF/E monolithic laminate. Prelim ILSS came in at ~ 52MPa and NO exotic Surface prep on the metal .... Ha!So “Hot Section” applications appear to be the current technical “high bar” for composites. Replacing high temperature metals (~1050c) with molded, lightweight, and DAMTOL Laminated Structures has been my focus for the last few years. GFP (Gas Flow Path) geometry has become realizable with both hand and automated layup technologies, particularly with inorganic matrices. STC/OEM replacement approval will be helped with the projected increased Life Cycle Cost savings.Design by analysis or at the least with justification, has been my mantra for the last 3 decades. Computational power has never been more accessible and useful in conceptual layout of a composite structure. Unfortunately material data availability has not kept pace and we constantly need to correlate to the as-built laminate scheme and still apply processing variances. So until we can access an AGATE like database for out-of-clave processes we are forced to adhere to the building block approach for structural integrity correlation to simulations ... (sigh)
