Senior Researcher Landscape History

Current

Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands

Senior researcher on landscape history at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands with a specific focus on the northwest European lowlands. Keywords in my research are amongst other: landscape archaeology, data analyses, data-driven and evidence based research, spatial modelling, digital heritage, mapping the diachronic development of landscapes, and studying past human-landscape interaction.

Aug 2022 - Present

Researcher/Data Analyst

Amersfoort, The Netherlands

Currently, I am mainly working on (large-scale) spatial analyses of heritage data, the implementation of heritage-based data standards, exchange models and the development of data management within the state government.

Jun 2017 - Aug 2022

Postdoctoral Researcher

Wageningen, Gelderland, Netherlands

As a postdoctoral researcher I studied heritage in wetland areas within the JPI-CH funded WETFUTURES project ("WETFUTURES: Wetland Futures in Contested Environments: an inter- and transdisciplinary approach to wetland heritage in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Ireland"). The project centered on the incredible richness and diversity of material and immaterial cultural heritage associated with Northwest European wetland environments. These dynamic areas are undergoing rapid change from climatic, demographic, economic and political influences, but there are no tailor-made or proactive studies to identify the impacts of change on their wide range of heritage values. Additionally, various stakeholders have different interests in these landscapes which are often difficult to reconcile. The WETFUTURES project was a collaboration between Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands), the University of Bradford (United Kingdom) and University College Cork (Ireland) and addresses these challenges and explores the ways in which wetland heritage can contribute to contemporary social challenges.Within my postdoctoral research I focused on three strongly varying case-study areas reflecting the diversity and the variety of challenges regarding wetland heritage: (1) the fenlands of the western-Netherlands, (2) the world-heritage site of Schokland, and (3) the world-heritage Wadden-Sea region.

Feb 2019 - Aug 2022

Phd Candidate "The Dark Age Of The Lowlands In An Interdisciplinary Light"

Utrecht Area, Netherlands

As a PhD researcher at the Department of Physical Geography, Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University I worked on (spatially) modelling the interaction between cultural and natural changes during the first millennium AD in the present-day Netherlands. By integrating large-scale cultural and geoscientific datasets, I reconstructed processes of change and persistence in settlement patterns, route networks, long-distance transport, palaeodemography and land-use systems during the Roman period and Early Middle Ages. This work is presented in a PhD thesis titled: "Changing ways, patterns of connectivity, habitation and persistance in Northwest European lowlands during the first millennium AD" which will be defended on 13-10-2017.

Dec 2012 - Apr 2017

Researcher Netherlands Centre For Dendrochronology (Ring Foundation)

Amersfoort, The Netherlands

During this time I mainly focused on the development of: (1) the Tree-Ring Data Standard (TRiDaS; an exchangeability format for tree-ring data), (2) the trusted-digital repository DCCD (containing thousands of international tree-ring series), (3) TRiDaBASE (a stand-alone database for tree-ring data storage), (4) an international collaborative dendrochronological research network, (5) multi-lingual controlled vocabularies for tree-ring research and (6) the digitisation, standardisation and enrichment of dendrochronological (meta)data. In 2011, I started to map and analyse the wooden finds excavated in the early-medieval emporium of Dorestad for the NWO-funded Dorestad: Vicus Famosus project. During this time, I (co-)developed best practices for wood preservation, determined the current state of the excavated finds and (re)analysed these, in a European context, unique early-medieval finds.
