DevOps culture is at the heart of my career, some would say they do DevOps - by utilising automation tools. I believe that it is not something that you can do. For me, it is a culture and way of working. The main components of which are communication and collaboration. Automation, continuous integration and delivery, and configuration management are only tools to facilitate this open culture.Experience with many tools, technologies, and providers including:Kubernetes, DockerTerraform, Puppet, Ansible, Chef, FabricAWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Rackspace, Softlayer, OpenstackDebian, Ubuntu, CoreOS, CentOSPrometheus, Sensu, PagerDuty, OSSEC, Zabbix, Icinga, NagiosElasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana (ELK)RabbitMQ, RedisGrafana, Graphite (and carbon), Diamond, CollectdJenkinsGit, Github, BitbucketAtlassian suite: Confluence & JIRAScripting - Bash, Ruby, Python, although able to read and understand other languages such as Go, Javascript, PHP

Staff Infrastructure Engineer, LeadPaperless Post Jun 2018 - PresentNew York, Ny, UsLeading a globally distributed team of 4 including myself we have upgraded our autoscaled Kubernetes clusters and associated tooling, delivered a GitOps pattern of deployment and begun work on rebuilding our metrics stack to current standards. I look forward to investigating service mesh deployments in the future as the technology matures. -
Infrastructure EngineerPaperless Post Apr 2017 - Jun 2018New York, Ny, UsFrom April 2017 - November 2017 (the launch of the Flyer Beta product), I was responsible for designing and building out a suitable Kubernetes deployment for the new fleet of microservices powering the beta product. From November 2017 onwards I have been primarily responsible for maintaining this platform and ensuring the team can learn more about how to operate and maintain Kubernetes clusters - where possible engaging with the community and contributing as appropriate.Alongside this, I have also been involved in maintaining the day to day core product.Technologies/products involve include: Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Chef, Sensu, Elasticsearch, Rails, Ruby, Go -
Infrastructure ArchitectEnsighten Jan 2015 - Mar 2017Menlo Park, California, UsInfrastructure Architect: May 2016 – PresentLead Sr. Infrastructure Engineer II: September 2015 – May 2016Senior Infrastructure Engineer: January 2015 – September 2015After returning to Ensighten as a full-time employee, I progressed rapidly from Senior Infrastructure Engineer to Lead and then Architect. As well as managing direct reports in the EMEA Infrastructure team I also work alongside the Director of Infrastructure (US based) to ensure collaboration across the global team. I've previously been involved in recruitment for the team including management of external recruiters, interviewing and providing feedback to candidates.Completely comfortable designing solutions on my own although I like to involve my team in technical decisions where possible. I've found that this provides many benefits over dictating a solution. It allows people to contribute alternative viewpoints as well as feel a greater sense of ownership of the solution, which is important for long-term maintenance.Overall I prefer the technical aspects of my role over the managerial aspects. Of the managerial aspects, my primary focuses are around mentoring and fostering better communication and collaboration.Responsible for handling both legacy maintenance, and greenfield development work. I'm familiar with API design, service orientated architecture and microservices.I can quickly find solutions to problems both when under pressure at 4am with alarms firing, and also in more constructive planning and whiteboarding sessions. I'm a very fast learner and I can pick up new skills quickly, however, when not using tools often I can forget syntax - that's what reference guides are for though in my opinion. I've also been involved in the work of the security team whilst at Ensighten, which I've found interesting. On the technical side, I have both led and contributed to various projects whilst at Ensighten and these are listed in the projects section. -
Consultant Infrastructure EngineerEnsighten Aug 2014 - Jan 2015Menlo Park, California, UsMaintenance and management of legacy infrastructure.Design and implementation of infrastructure for new products. -
Devops ManagerEnsighten Mar 2014 - Aug 2014Menlo Park, California, UsThis was not actually a change of company as TagMan was acquired by Ensighten.http://www.ensighten.com/blog/ensighten-acquires-tagman-game-onThe change of job role was under discussion pre-acquisition and has the following goals and responsibilities attached. I was actually already doing a lot of this before the acquisition anyway.Goals- Align development and operational goals.- Facilitate communication between development and operationsResponsibilities- Ops presence in sprint process / planning- Foster better communication between ops, dev and product- Involved in key technical decisions- Management of Ops priorities- Delegation of tasks within Ops- Push the use of automation within TagMan dev and Ops teamsThis role involved furthering the work already done on our automation using puppet and fabric. This role also brought the addition of on call work as part of the operations team on call rota. This involved a wide range of troubleshooting. -
Devops EngineerSimply Business Sep 2014 - Nov 2014London, London, GbIn my short time at Simply Business I was involved in the automated setup of a new AWS account including test driven AWS infrastructure and automated provisioning atop of cloud formation.Simply Business was a great place to work, but I left to return back to Ensighten full time and assist with ongoing effort to sunset the legacy Tagman platform and build new in Ensighten. -
Devops EngineerTagman Nov 2013 - Mar 2014During my previous role at TagMan as PHP developer I found that we were having issues testing our product and getting it shipped to customers. The development and release pipeline was slow and painful despite working in a supposedly agile team.In part we found as a team that this was due to legacy testing systems and a lack of interaction between development and operations. With the help of the operations team we worked to build a stable test system and get a new semi automated pipeline underway. This was the part of my slippery slope into automation evangelism. After this I worked on creating an automated puppet test rig for the systems that connect to the MC, and begun to improve the release process for the MC.

Php DeveloperTagman Jul 2013 - Nov 2013As a PHP developer at TagMan I was part of a team involved in the development of the Management Console (MC). The MC development team was an agile team and we followed a 2 week Scrum cycle, with daily standups and a retrospective and review at the end of each cycle. The MC was build using Zend 1 and PEAR installed packages. A lot of time was spent upgrading the build process and tooling around the MC to use more current system such as Doctrine and Composer.
