About Daniel Rowntree

Daniel has over 25 years experience in developing products from concept to market with a wide range of manufacturers from small family run concerns with turnovers of £5m to leading automotive manufacturers with global interests. In all of these organisations, he has built a reputation for introducing new and more effective tools and processes in order to develop products and manage development projects.New products are designed by people so Daniel’s focus on developing personal working relationships with individuals is key to his success. Additionally, he is keen to share his knowledge and experience with others whilst continually embracing new working methods and processes. He endeavours to bring the very best product development practices into every part of each organisation from the drawing board to the board room to ensure that the products are successful on the market.Daniel thinks at a strategic level, putting new product development at the heart of the business and the nerve centre for the future. His way of working with the wider development team, not just the core designers, has delighted many and resulted in reduced development costs and lead times along with increased product quality.During economic downturns, he has developed products which have resulted in sales orders increasing by a factor of 10. To see the effect that this has on the workforce is inspiring and one of the key factors which drives him to do more.Daniel’s success has come by identifying ways of adapting tools and processes to the individual cultures of organisations so that the processes work for those in the development team rather than the team members working for the processes. This frees up the team members to concentrate on their job of forging the future success of their business.

  • Thomas Dudley Ltd
    Design Manager
Thomas Dudley Ltd Aug 2005 - Jul 2010
    Dudley, West Midlands
UK’s leading manufacturer of injection moulded plastic cisterns and water control valves for the bathroom sector. Turnover £20m. Employees 270.To lead and manage all new product development activities from conception of ideas to launch onto the market with use of an in-house design team.• Traditional markets were diminishing and there was no process for identifying future product or market opportunities. Introduced a process and organised and chaired meetings which enabled ideas to be identified and filtered according to their potential commercial viability. We were able to remain competitive in established markets and secure contracts in newly identified growth markets.• The design team was continually called to the assembly floor to resolve production quality issues. Introduced a process where each product was approved by a cross-functional team before any parts were sent to the customer. This dramatically reduced the number of queries from production, and in turn reduced the number of customer quality complaints by 80%.• Modifications were carried out to parts without a complete understanding of whether the change would resolve the underlying problems. Introduced a controlled modification process starting with the identification of the root cause of the problem and concluding with an approval of the product prior to release. Weekly modifications meetings were reduced from 90 minutes to 15 minutes and due to a focused team approach the number of open issues was reduced by two thirds at any one time.

The products were delivered to the customer, meeting exacting time and quality requirements for each build phase from development until launch.• The Project Manager was over occupied on another project and was therefore unable to fully support the project activities. Mistakes were eradicated and the speed of product development was increased, reducing overall costs by over 10%.• Following a takeover of the company it became clear that the organisation was not offering a similar standard of service to the same customer on different projects. Trained and managed Design Engineers in Spain and France to ensure that they followed the lessons learned from projects successfully completed in the UK. The projects transferred smoothly from the development phase in one country to launch phase in another, ensuring continuity of momentum and customer service.• A problem solving group rarely met for weekly meetings and was failing to achieve corporate targets.
