Analyzed all lawyer compliance with the Tariff for services provided for clients receiving Legal Aid within the province of British Columbia. Advised lawyers of mistakes and/or corrections required in billing. Launched in-depth investigations of lawyers where there was significant evidence of improper billing procedures and failure to comply with Tariff rules. On occasion, reported findings to the Law Society of British Columbia and participated in disciplinary action. Supervised two support staff and directed work flow. Reported recovery monies and Tariff loopholes to Director of Audit & Investigation. Worked with Director of Tariff to advise on wording of Tariff items to provide clearer definitions to lawyers. Made decisions regarding clearing and/or holding accounts based on investigation status and compliance of instructions to lawyers.

Worked directly with Mark Benton, now CEO of the Legal Services Society, to provide administrative support to both departments. Mark was also General Counsel for the Society and provided administrative support for any legal action the Society was undergoing. Organized all Tariff Committee meetings between the Society and private bar lawyers. Assisted in the development and delivery of the revised Tariff in 1998 to all private bar lawyers. Distributed updates to the bar, responded to inquiries from the bar, and initiated the online version of the Tariff which is still available today. Worked with all departments to ensure accuracy in publishing, administering and clarifying Tariff rules. Also was responsible for maintaining all confidential personnel information for the Tariff and Appeals Departments.

Interviewed clients applying for legal aid in the areas of criminal, family, immigration and poverty law at the Vancouver branch office of LSS as well as the provincial courthouse at 222 Main Street. Advised client of their acceptance or denial of legal aid based on criteria outlined in the Operations Policy and Procedure manual based on type of case and financial eligibility. Worked with translators to ensure all clients were given accurate legal information. Referred eligible cases to in-house and private bar lawyers chosen based on expertise and experience. Provided administrative support to the Director of Intake. Responsible for maintaining all confidential personnel information for the Intake Department.

Provided administrative assistance to family law lawyers employed by the Legal Services Society of BC. Drafted court documents, scheduled appointment, maintained and updated court calendars, trained other legal assistants.
