The 1st ECEG is a direct reporting unit under U.S Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT) and provides highly mobile, light, and heavy construction and repair capability throughout the AFCENT area of responsibility when requirements or threat levels exceed normal civil engineer unit capabilities. The QST forward deployed to multiple areas including Hamid Karzai International Airport from 18-29 August 2021. The team’s primary assignment was to provide mission-enabling firefighting capabilities to support Operation Allies Refuge during the Largest Airlift in History. In total, the QST mitigated over 22 emergencies to include three aircraft inflight/ground emergencies, three hazardous material responses, six fires, and saved the life of a newborn infant. Crash Fire Rescue (CFR) capabilities provided by the QST enabled 300+ sorties to evacuate over 122,000 Afghanistan citizens, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) employees, and Americans. The team also forward deployed to an austere location in Syria enabling 86 sorties in a combat environment. -
