Broadcast Engineer

Current

Naperville, Illinois, United States

My current work as a Broadcast Engineer involves setting up live stream events like Division III college football broadcasts, directing and engineering studio programming, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance, graphics and video editing, and helping the company navigate within the media space on leadership committee. I have also worked in Python scripting accessing and manipulating data in Vimeo, Google, Youtube APIs, ffmpeg, After Effects, Photoshop, and Premiere.

Oct 2021 - Present

Video Editor

Freelance

Northville, Michigan, United States

I am currently getting back into the swing of video production work again. I am doing some freelance editing for a company that produces video tutorials for Autodesk. Autodesk has a diverse array of software for just about every industry and it has been interesting to go through these prerecorded videos with voice-overs of subject matter experts as they explain the finer workings of the software which I then annotate, add graphics, and clean up to produce a final product. I am also creating the subtitle files (SRT) for closed captioning and ADA compliance.

Dec 2020 - Oct 2021

Simulation Operator

Dearborn, Michigan, United States

I took a bit of a detour during the height of Covid into a different technical field working as a simulation operator for Argo AI. This company is working with Ford and VW to create the software and artificial intelligence to power tomorrow’s self-driving cars. This job required a lot of learning esoteric systems used for their software built on C, Python, and Linux to run their custom-built simulators. These simulators would allow the operators to build imagined and real-world scenarios of intersections and situations that would encounter and then run countless iterations on those to try and prepare the AI for any possible scenarios it might encounter. I was tasked with designing simulations based on known issues, real-world observations, or even just high speeds and helping the AI learn how to navigate those situations. Collaborating in teams despite being in lockdown at home was a challenge but I was able to learn a lot about how software is made in a fast-paced Agile environment which was tracked through Jira. It also spurred me to look more into how they were using Linux and Python to control their simulation environment.

Studio Production Manager

Okemos, Mi

HOMTV is a place that leaves an indelible mark on everyone who works or interns there as it is mainly fairly low budget but had high quality, award-winning production standards. My main duties as Studio Production Manager were to provide live coverage of board meetings for Meridian Township television and streaming channel every week but there was also light-hearted community programming to create like daily news, sports, or special interest shows that I would direct or technical produce. I was also tasked with being the lead technical engineer in charge of selecting and maintaining all of the HD equipped studio, being the subject-matter expert on numerous high-end systems like Ross Inception newswriting systems, Ross Xpression real-time graphics systems, Tricaster TC-1 and Broadcast Pix video switchers operation and maintenance, and an Editshare storage area network. I administrated the migration from our old fiber SAN to our new ultrafast network connected SAN Editshare while also setting up a plan to digitize 30+ years of archived content across numerous different formats (DVC, Beta, ¾” and more!) to help preserve the years of work that came before me. This included setting up metadata fields within Editshare and archiving the long term storage of video to LTO-8 formatted tape. I also wrote some Python coding to access the Editshare API to allow us to transfer metadata information across to Google sheets API for viewing across systems. I also taught incoming interns every semester production techniques on how to produce and direct evening board meetings on their own making sure they knew how to check video connections, prep graphics systems, troubleshoot audio problems and set levels, and compose proper shots when directing. I valued the time I got to spend mentoring these college students every semester and enjoyed watching them progress as they went through the year and improved their skills and confidence with what they were doing.

Sep 2016 - Dec 2019

Multimedia Associate

Dearborn, Mi

At Henry Ford College I got to view the inner workings of higher education. I was tasked with selecting and maintaining audio-visual equipment across three large campuses. The campus had everything from large auditorium with rickety old systems for audio and video, to everyday class room tech, to large meeting rooms with Crestron and Extron systems. There were also a few state-of-the-art lecture capture rooms with PTZ cameras, complex control systems, along with enhanced audio systems. Lecture capture systems were becoming more commonplace, and I would help facilitate the installation with contractors by prepping rooms for new equipment or checking on their progress and verifying their work. Given this was a series of large campuses with disparate systems the challenge was to stay ahead of problems and keep systems running, troubleshooting on the fly, and maintaining good relations with other staff, administration, and faculty.

Apr 2014 - Sep 2016

Refurbish Technician

Critical Signal Technologies, Inc.

Novi, Mi

This was a technical position I worked at while going back to school. The company supplied systems to seniors similar to Life Alert which would allow a person to carry a pendant button around their neck which when pressed would connect them to a live operator that could listen in through a speaker phone. I was tasked with programming and refurbishing these devices as they were going out or coming back in to the facility. Each device would have to be checked for proper operation, reprogrammed to the proper database, cleaned, and then shipped back out. During my time there, I was given a large project of handling a new product line based on cellular technology that could be taken anywhere and would provide the same function of allowing the user to press a button to contact help as well as provided GPS coordinates for the device. I was tasked with creating an inventory system as there was none and the company wanted to have a rolling start with the devices. I created a Excel system to track the devices with cross references to the phone numbers and IMEI numbers with VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables to provide information on the devices as developers created a more robust interface that would work with their current backend system.

Jul 2013 - Apr 2014

Video Production

Self Employed

Livonia, Mi

As I worked through college courses I did numerous freelance opportunities one of which was for a company that covered junior league hockey games. These games would be streamed live via the internet but also recorded. I operated camera some days while other days I would operate the duplication equipment and work with customers eager to buy copies of the games of the tournament their young hockey star just played in. I produced some promotional video that small businesses and some self marketers used to advance their personal brand and services. This included video, audio, and graphics production. I did some behind the scenes camera operation for a local feature length movie production called CollabFeature’s “The Owner” which garnered some film festival praise. I also did some volunteer work with the Yankee Air Museum producing and editing testimonials of war veterans for posterity. The footage was submitted to the Library of Congress along with transcripts to be entered into the Congressional record.

Mar 2011 - Aug 2011

Warehouse Distribution Coordinator

Sumitomo Electric Interconnect Products

I worked for Sumitomo for almost exactly 10 years in the role of Warehouse Distribution Coordinator. This involved distributing a specialized auto part manufactured in California from a warehouse in Michigan to numerous auto plants mainly to the east of the Mississippi, in a Just-In-Time warehouse environment. The required close attention to detailed order fulfillment, data entry, customs requirements for shipping to Canada or Mexico, shipping and receiving documents, safe forklift operation, and managing all aspects of a multi-million dollar operation that only had two employees. This required a good deal of dedication by the two of us to always cover for one another, if we were both gone for even a day it was possible to bring an assembly line to a screeching halt.
