In 1999 I moved from being a professor of computer science to being a professor of information systems. In computer science, faculty are expected to get research grants from national entities, such as NSF. However, in information systems departments, faculty are expected to consult with industry to develop and maintain business knowledge and to teach students about practical aspects of business. With my background in medicine and computing and given the passage of HIPAA in 1996 with its enormous impacts on information systems for health care, I became an expert on information systems for HIPAA compliance. I became a leading national speaker and adviser on the subject and worked with hospital networks, insurance companies, and government agencies on how to implement the privacy, security, and electronic transactions requirements of HIPAA.
