About Roy Vance

I have been with Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and tourism since 2000. I worked at Village Creek for two and a half years then was hired at Parkin Archeological State Park and still going strong. I also took on the maintenance position at Hampson Archeological Museum State Park in 2020. I try to work between the two parks to better both parks and to try and cut costs for the state. Over the years I have completed several projects. One project I am about to start on is making a drum as authentic as possible to the Native Indigenist people's drums for our area. As a Maintenance man I have learned many things concerning Park operations, budgets, interpretation, building items with great results on low budgets. I've helped many other people at other parks throughout the state and have talked to other state employees from other states, through diagnostics on different equipment. I have helped with many programs, but my favorite is the Kettle corn program. I want to be able to teach others about the past and how the past contributes to the now and the future. If we learn from the past, we can change the ways we did things and not repeat them. We are teachers to the future of our world and we can still learn everyday ourselves.

My job is simply described as a working supervisor. I maintain fifteen buildings at two State Parks. I have a small crew and a few volunteers to do many tasks. We mow over a hundred acres, we have approximately three quarters of a mile concrete trail. I also help interpret what happened in our park to make it what it is today. I have talked to over three hundred children and adults in a day. I also sit on the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and tourism Maintenance Committee. There are thirteen members on this committee and we challenge ourselves by putting together a Maintenance Expo for our Maintenance staff in the Arkansas system. New technics in ground maintenance, housekeeping / janitorial. New products for managing commercial mowers and other equipment. We work together to help make new guidelines or just help follow the older guidelines and to better all personnel. We learn from other personnel in our system as well as from other businesses in our state, other states, and from around the world. We strive to meet nature and humans and to help humans experience past, present and future. I tell my co-workers to remember the past, learn from it. To utilize the past in the present, and show the future we cared enough to help and to share. If I can teach one person away to make a living and (hopefully) love it, then I have actually done something worth remembering. To be able to teach one how to weld, mow, sow, electrical, plumbing, to speak their mind and know when to hold it. What a feat of accomplishment. Share what you learn and be able to learn new and share as you grow. My job changes frequently but stays the same. I was told in this description of myself that I use we, us and other terms that make me seem as if I depend on others too much. Well, I do depend on others to the point that I constantly try to learn new problem-solving skills and new skills every day. So yes, we did it together and by myself. With God Leading me.
