About Roy Voss

I am a Mechanical Engineer who enjoys making a difference. I strive to achieve cost effective quality products from concept, to prototype and testing, to design refinement and into production. I get the job done by working with people inside and outside the company and using the resources available to make the best product possible. I value the knowledge of the past. I strive to understand why things were done the way they were on existing products and I improve on them. This has resulted in five star rated products with unique features which are sold all over the world. I have designed and rapid prototyped (using SolidWorks) sheet metal parts, plastic parts (molded and thermoformed), die castings, machined parts and other parts made from a wide variety of materials and processes. I make sure the design is tested and proven and meets or exceeds the customer’s requirements. I am not afraid to learn about what I do not know and try what has not been done before. I have reduced costs in the millions of dollars annually and increased reliability by specifying less expensive materials, processes or suppliers, packaging improvements, eliminating fasteners and simplifying assemblies. Key skills include:|Product Support| Product Development | New Project Proposals | Project Management | Cost Reduction | Supplier Development| Customer Service| Process Improvement | Design for Manufacturability | Prototyping | Testing and Analysis | Problem Solving |SolidWorks |CAD Models and Drawings |Bills of Material |UL and International Regulatory Product Certification | Inventory Control |

  • Weber-Stephen Products Llc
    Senior Project Engineer
    Weber-Stephen Products Llc Feb 2005 - Oct 2020
    Palatine, Illinois, Us
Designed grills, fire places, pizza ovens, and accessories. The following patents were issued: Gas Inlet Fixture and Air Shutter, Portable Fireplace, Sliding Bezel.I made a proof of concept prototype to propose a larger electric grill. The project became real after the concept prototype cooked a full load of steaks for an executive staff meeting. It was in production the next season. Obtained UL and CE certification. I found an international supplier of a similar component for the indoor appliance industry with capabilities an existing supplier did not have. Negotiated an acceptable disclosure agreement when legal departments could not agree, helped the supplier redesign the components to work in an outdoor environment and brought the feature to production while meeting the time and cost objectives. Designed patented plastic slides which allowed knob bezels to be easily positioned in two directions before screws were tightened to make a difficult assembly problem relatively simple to do. Developed a trouble free, easy to assemble, gas grill ignition system (including components which snap together for attachment to new burners and valves).Eliminated one position on the assembly line for attaching a battery pack to the inside of the cabinet by having the supplier mount the screws to the battery pack with clearance under the screw head and by using keyhole slots. Rapid prototyped my simplified single part ceramic design. Two assemblies proposed by the supplier were combined into one assembly with both the supplier and Purchasing’s blessing.Rapid prototyped wire clip only once with extra plastic, and adjusted snap fit on a belt sander. Print was adjusted and went to production on time. Replaced long wire lead assembly enclosed within a manually assembled tubing with more expensive wire (but eliminating the tubing). Cost savings over $3 per grill. Mentored other engineers – handing off ideas, providing alternatives, and asking questions.

Placed at Perkin-Elmer by MURRAY, INC, Buffalo Grove, IL (contract engineer) Worked on improvements to existing products. Redesigned robotic gripper assembly. Reduced cost and improved component availability for a product which was designed in the UK. Completed the change and release notices required. Designed (using SolidWorks), prototyped, and brought to production accessories for their robotic liquid handing equipment.
