• NSF Grant (2019-2022): Documentation and comparative grammatical analysis of aspects of five Iranian languages. Primary Investigator: Dr. Simin Karimi, co-PIs: Dr. Heidi Harley & Dr. Michael Hammond.Collected and documented large amounts of natural language data and developed linguistic theories by creating questionnaires for different aspects of these languages, leading language elicitation sessions with native speakers, transcribing the elicitation audio files, and analyzing the data to generalize the linguistic patterns. Specifically, worked on the syntactic structure of complex predicates in these languages, second position clitic phenomena in Sorani and Iron Ossetian, as well as the interaction of wh-constructions and clitics in Iron Ossetian.• NSF Grant (2016-2019): A Descriptive and Theoretical Analysis of Complex Predicates in Iranian Languages. Primary Investigator: Dr. Simin Karimi, co-PIs: Dr. Andrew Carnie & Dr. Heidi Harley.Interviewed native speakers of several Iranian languages (Persian, Sorani-Kurdish, Kurmanji, Baluchi, Ossetian, etc) to elicit data on complex predicates, clitics, passive, ellipsis, and resultative constructions, created the University of Arizona Complex Predicates in Iranian Languages database, available open access through the UA campus repository, presented papers that grew out of our search in different conferences. • Dr. Noam Chomsky (Spring/Fall 2019).

• Supervisor: Dr. Mihai Surdeanu (Computational Language Understanding Lab)Worked on taxonomy acquisition (hyponymy/hypernymy); wrote grammar rules using an in-house rule-based information extraction (IE) framework that allowed operating over both surface and syntactic structures in a given grammatical rule; investigated different strategies to taxonomy acquisition (rule-based method, representation learning, Surface IE and Syntax-based IE), and provided custom data for various models to evaluate the robustness of distant supervision methods to different amounts of noise during training; annotated a gold-standard dataset for evaluation purposes.
