About Roy Ascott

Roy Ascott, recipient of the 2014 Ars Electronica Golden Nica Award "Visionary Pioneers of Media Art", has shown at Tate Britain, Shanghai Biennale, Venice Biennale, V2 , Milan Triennale, Biennale do Mercosul Brazil, European Media Festival, MAM, Paris, etc.Seminal projects: La Plissure du Texte at Electra, Paris 1984, (Second Life versions 2010, 2012), and Aspects of Gaia, Ars Electronica 1989. Retrospectives shown at Plymouth Arts Centre, 2009; Incheon International Festival of Digital Art, Korea 2010; at SPACE, Hackney, London, 2011; and as 'Syncretic Cybernetics", Shanghai Biennale 2012. "Roy Ascott: The Analogues" was shown at Plug In ICA, Winnipeg, 2013. He is Founding President of the Planetary Collegium (World Universities Forum Award Best Practice in Higher Education 2011) based in Plymouth University, UK. DeTao Master of Technoetic Arts at DTMA, Shanghai; and Hon. Professor at Aalborg University, Copenhagen.He established the radical 1960s Groundcourse at Ealing and Ipswich, and taught at the Slade, St Martins and Central Schools of Art. President Ontario College of Art, Toronto; Vice-President San Francisco Art Institute; Professor of Communications Theory, University of Applied Arts, Vienna; Professor of Interactive Arts, University of Wales. Roy Ascott founded the Centre for Advanced Inquiry in Interactive Arts at Gwent College, University of Wales in 1994. He then relocated the programme in Plymouth University, reconstituting it as the Planetary Collegium. The Collegium is concerned with doctoral and post-doc research in the area of art, technology and consciousness. The CAiiA-Hub is based in the Faculty of Arts, Plymouth University, and has nodes in Shanghai at the DeTao Masters Academy, at the Fondazione Ahref, Trento, Italy; at the Ionion Center for Culture and the Arts in Kefalonia, Greece; at NGL – SAA (Neue Galerie Luzern) Lucerne, Switzerland; and at the University of the Arts in Zurich, Switzerland. It has produced over fifty doctoral graduates, and maintains an annual enrolment of ± fifty five doctoral candidates, based internationally.
