Profile bio

About Dr. Roy Davies

There are two things I love to spend my time on; technology and people. With technology, I have a wide area of interest, from cloud based, AI driven digital agents, to low-level controllers for IoT, high-end VR, and everything in between. I am a multi-full-stack developer. At the human side, I'm fascinated in the psychology of human computer interaction (and human cognition and perception in gerenal), an area of interest that was awakened when I started with VR in the late 90s. The magic happens when these two areas come together. On the more philosophical side, I'm interested in ideas. How does an idea grow and propagate in people's minds? How do we collectively decide that an idea is fit to grow and combine with other ideas? And most importantly, how do we encourage and grow ideas that are beneficial for humanity and our biosphere? The problem is that people are complex. We are ruled by emotion, we like to believe we are right, and we don't like to be told what to do. We have many pressures on us to get through each day and look after ourselves and our families. So, we often make decisions that are not good for humanity or our biosphere either through ignorance, willfulness or simply because we have more pressing priorities.Testing ideas for soundness is important, so we can evaluate its benefits and problems. To test an idea we need to expose it to as diverse a range of minds and experiences as possible and get people to critically evaluate it. If it survives all that, and it is beneficial for humanity and the biosphere, then it should be encouraged to grow and thrive and become the basis for new ideas. Such processes are the foundation for both science and opensource communities, and actively counteract our emotions. However, time is pressing. Our planet, the only world we can live on, is rapidly changing in a way that is already negatively affecting many people, plants and other organisms. It is not going to be enough to make small changes here and there. However, if the entire human population could make changes, we might get somewhere. Indeed, one aspect of Covid-19 is that it has shown how air clarity can be dramatically improved by fewer people driving cars and producing industrial pollution. How do we solve our existential problem? My idea is that it all starts with ideas being exposed to multi-diverse, critical thought; a sort of citizen science, opensource idea evaluation programme. And if we apply that to ideas dreamed up to benefit humanity and our biosphere - perhaps we can turn the tide.
