For almost 13 years I worked at Europe's leading grants consultancy called PNO Consultants. The company started in 1984, has about 300 employees and offices across Europe. I focussed specifically on European innovation grants (FP6, FP7 and H2020) in a variety of technology domains. My specialties were: ICT, security, health, transport, environmental sustainability (also through specialist-programmes like NER300, EEPR, LIFE etc.). My work consisted on helping universities, research institutes and many companies define their key-innovation projects, build project consortia and write and review technical grant proposals. Some examples of my activities are listed in the projects-section below.Typical clients included: CERN, Sintef, Unilever, university of Tampere, E.ON, GDF-Suez, university of Manchester, DLR, city of Amsterdam, IBA, university of Dresden, Thales NL, Océ (Canon), several Fraunhofer institutes, TU Delft, TU Eindhoven, VITO, NWO, EPFL.

I was also an elected member of the regional parliament of Limburg between 2007 and 2015 (I did not stand for re-election in 2015). Limburg is the southern-most province of the Netherlands. Capital of Limburg is the city of Maastricht. My party is the Dutch left-of-centre Social-Democratic party (PvdA). My focus areas as politician were: economic affairs & finance. Between 2007-2011 I also acted as vice-Chair of the political group in the regional parliament. In 2013 I became a member of the national party committee responsible for writing the party's election manifesto for the European Parliament elections 2014.Typical topics I was involved in and/or was the spokesperson during my time as politician: (*) financial rescue of Maastricht airport, (*) construction of the 27km long Buitenring Parkstad road infrastructure, (*) sale of the province's Essent shareholding to energy company RWE, (*) transformation of old industrial sites, (*) annual accounts of the province, (*) training programme for older unemployed to become technical operators, (*) CO2 capture & storage, (*) safety of LPG & other dangerous substances via rail through densly populated areas, (*) high-speed internet infrastructure, (*) development of a regional Smart Services Cluster, (*) development of the regional Chemelot Research campus.

Vanderlet (now part of Provide Consulting) is a specialised ICT company for (remote) management of large IT-systems, ranging from HP current and legacy systems (like the HP3000 to HP9000) up to current Microsoft systems. At Vanderlet I supported the owner/CEO in setting a new strategic course for the company, developing the long-term business strategy, the product portfolio and the client approach. Out of this activity I was tasked to set up a new subsidiary company called Careforce. This company focussed on marketing and implementing network security products for large IT systems. As network security has since become a main element of remote IT-management, Careforce's activities have been integrated into the main service delivery portfolio of Vanderlet.

e-Centric was a company I set up with two partners specialised in ICT software and business planning. As an internet company we developed 2 business concepts on (1) educational services for primary school and (2) managed ICT-services for companies. Our products attracted a lot of attention and participation from investors, but the actual market roll-out in 2001 was suddenly frustrated by the internet confidence crisis. Sad, but true. It was a very valuable lesson in entrepreneurship; something I have benefited from ever since. The company is currently not active. The products are still owned by the three co-founders.

Training & Enterprise Council (TEC) based in south-London (Bromley). SOLOTEC also had the ambition to develop its own European funding expertise for south London (and Kent). At SOLOTEC the aim was not only to develop training oriented projects, but also European projects related to growing SME-business and encouraging research collaborations. That fitted well with my experience at FOCUS and my knowledge of EU funding. At that time my special interest was on supporting companies which developed new ICT/internet based products & services.

Training & Enterprise Council for central London, based at Centrepoint. The TEC was a local body whose task was to administer publicly funded training programmes. Main focus was on projects related to improving education level of people in work (ESF, Lifelong Learning), access to work, research. When I joined, FOCUS had set itself the goal of becoming the Centre of Expertise for all seven London TECs. I was hired to develop in-depth knowledge on development and implementation of European funded projects. This meant both the development and running of 'own projects' as well as supporting external organisations (charities, voluntary organisations, universities and businesses) in their ambition to run a European project. Great job and fantastic colleagues. Sadly the TECs were disbanded shortly after the Conservative party came back to power.
