Laboratory of Dr. Karina Cramer, supervised by Paul Nakamura"Developmental plasticity of sound localization system in the auditory brainstem, in mice and gerbils."- To detect the sensitive period of VCN-MSO projections post cochlear and cochlear nucleus removal in gerbil pups, and to evaluate if axonal sprouting to MSO is proportional to the integrity of MSO dendrites after ablation, neuronal extensions were observed using Nissl staining. Neuronal cell death was detected with the fluorojade stain.- Also performed Synapsin and Synaptophysin staining to test whether the new synapses forming at MNTB are functional.- Genotyped mice to detect the Eph protein mutants in the colony, in an experiment to examine the role of Eph proteins in post-natal plasticity and their possible role in the difference in VCN-MSO connection sensitivity.
