About Roger Reddel
Executive director of Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI), and Lorimer Dods Professor at The University of Sydney. Licensed medical practitioner and Board-certified medical oncologist (FRACP) in Australia, and PhD in cancer research. Post-doctoral research at the US National Cancer Institute. Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Royal Society NSW, and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.CMRI's research aims to solve difficult problems in children's health including cancer, and especially to harness the technological advances in genomics for the benefit of children with inherited diseases. Because a lot of our research is at the fundamental cellular and molecular level, many of our discoveries also apply to adults. CMRI has a very extensive network of Australian and international collaborators. My area of research is the immortality of cancer cells, an almost universal characteristic of cancers, with a particular focus on the role of chromosome ends (telomeres). The main aim of this work is to find new cancer treatments, but it is also contributing to understanding premature ageing in children and ageing in adults. CMRI is the site of a major research program (ProCan®) on the proteome of all types of cancers, in collaboration with cancer researchers around the world. The initial aim is to measure the levels of about many thousands of different proteins in tens of thousands of cancer samples, and to correlate the protein pattern with the type of cancer and the response to treatment. When completed, we expect to be able to diagnose the cancer type and subtype, and predict the most appropriate treatment for individual cancer patients – within 36 hours of receiving a cancer sample for analysis.Interests: child health, innovative cancer treatments, precision cancer medicine, cancer cell immortality, telomeres, proteomics, genomics, big data, scientific rigour and reproducibility, creating high-performing teams, organization of research networks, science communication.
