President & Ceo. Awards: Governor'S Medal Of Science & Tech, Ceo Of The Year, & Chair'S Hall Of FameUtah Technology Council (Utc) Oct 1999 - Dec 2017UtahUnder Nelson's leadership, Nelson built one of the 3-4 top tech councils in North America. Example: Created the nation's leading black-tie event featuring 15 of the Globe's TOP TECH CEOs as Hall of Fame keynotes, including Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, Satya Nadella, Marc Benioff, and Steve Balmer! As the steward of Utah's tech ecosystem, the UTAH TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL created a powerful, unified "VOICE" for technology businesses in the State. Early on, focus groups established 15 years of stellar success with its THREE HIGHEST PRIORITIES. The foremost priority was fundamentally changing the "early-stage capital structure of the state" to fund innovative and start-up companies. UTC drove the passage of the $100M UTAH FUND OF FUNDS -- attracting significant capital from dozens of VCs. Nelson and Chairman West, board service for 12 years. In 2001, UTC passed the ENGINEERING INITIATIVE! It significantly increased the capacity of professors/teachers at state universities, producing talent to fuel the industry's talent shortage. Requiring university presidents to match state funds created a billion-dollar endowment fund (equivalent) and increased entering freshmen majors from 9% to 26% at the lead university over twenty years. UTC's influential advocacy and impactful policy initiatives fundamentally changed the economics of the State, creating its "TECH BOOM" -- and making it the #1 economic state in the nation for over a decade (Forbes)! In his second decade, Nelson's Public Policy Committee and Board did a stellar job of expanding the K-20 talent pipeline for high-tech positions and fostering the development of existing talent within Utah's innovative companies. Technology veterans and newcomers alike joined UTC to help continue to propel the growth of their companies and Utah's tech ecosystem, which became recognized nationally. It had 6,000+ tech companies. See: www.utahtech.org.Awards: "CEO of the YEAR" by Tech CEOs & Board; Chairman Will West's "Hall of Famer.

President & Ceo - Governor'S Medal Of Science & Technology.Utah Technology Council (Utc) Oct 1999 - Dec 2017Utah, United StatesSince the severe TALENT SHORTAGE is our tech industry's #1 issue with 1,000s of high-paid openings, we're committed to attracting and building talent to further "fuel the growth" of Utah's 6,000+ IT and Clean Tech companies. The Commission is the Governor's initiative to get the state's 30 foremost leaders together who impact K-20 education to advance and get in synch this complex area. UTC's Public Policy Forum screens the 1,500 bills filed each legislative session, including over 100 dealing with education. We identify a few high-priority education bills that have the most significant impact on this education pipeline to pass, oppose or fund. With the industry's full backing, we continue to have remarkable success in passing a high percentage of these bills so that we can better serve the 640,000 K-12 students. The innovative $45M STEM Action Center was our #1 initiative that passed in the 2013 and 2014 sessions. This is new funding for K-12 education to help students embrace digital tools and provide professional training. We're very proud of our work with most of the state's 850 middle- and high school counselors. Over 100 CEO/ trustees/ senior executives have presented at the annual Counselors Summit to help counselors know how to "excite students" over the past five years. In January 2014, we released the Hottest 50 STEM Jobs List, which for the first time identifies especially where the hot jobs are in Utah. See utahtech.org for more advocacy successes with the legislature and state board of education over the past decade. It changes you to be in the classroom - to see the great teachers who value having industry come in to help students see what Rigor and STEM matter. In May 2015, led the effort to excite students at Edison Elementary, a Title 1 school -- having 70 tech execs teach kids for a day. We were excited to return with Lt. Governor Spencer Cox (2016) and Senate Candidate Mitt Romney (2017).

Co-Founder, Chair & Ceo; Exec. Comm. & Board Member (2000-0017). Distinguished Leadership Award.Technology Councils Of North America (Tecna) Oct 1999 - Sep 2017North AmericaTECNA Council CEOs recognized Nelson with the DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD (first awarded). TECNA's core value continues to be its best practice for CEOs and council management. It strengthens associations by driving GREATER MEMBER VALUE to its tech members. TECNA had over 22,000 tech companies and members in 50 tech councils in the U.S. and Canada -- the largest in North America.Chair & CEO of TECNA from 2007 to 2009, when it was reinvented, it provided the latest governance and relevant direction. Worked closely with the new TechAmercia's CEOs to establish its national brand -- adding our 18,000 member companies to its national lobbying clout; provided leadership support facilitating the consolidation of national IT trade associations - from 17 to 7. Provided active leadership as an Executive Committee Member from 2007 to 2009. Its other core member value was national IT policy, including annual Fly-ins to Washington DC for members to engage with our many Congressional Delegations on pressing national public policy issues like Skilled Worker Immigration Reform (I-Squared), Patent Troll Reform, and GINA with Senator Hatch's tremendous help. NOTE: Nelson was integral in facilitating the federal Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act (GINA) passage in 2008! He worked closely with Senators Hatch and Bennett (after one U.S. senator held it up for nine years). -

Under Nelson's leadership, UTC passed the $100M FUND in 2003 with 150 CEOs, trustees, and senior execs actively making the case with the legislature and governor. Executive Committee & Board Member.Csba (Council Of State Bioscience Associations) 2006 - 2013Washington DcCouncil of State Bioscience Association -- 50 grassroots Life Science organizations, nationally tied to BIO International in Washington, DC. On the CSBA Board from 2006 - 2013 before UTC helped launch by initially funding BioUtah, the state's independent LS trade association which is focused on Utah's medical device and diagnostic members and their mostly federal issues. Fortunately UTC still has LS members because of UTC compelling value proposition and state public policy agenda, but continues to encourage all LS companies to join BioUtah first to advance their industry especially with FDA in Washington and for needed industry specific content. When a hybrid organization, developed many great friends in the industry, both locally and nationally! Unfortunately FDA regulation prevents predictability, so these exceptional medical device, diagnostic and biotech companies are challenged to be "sustainable." If not sustainable, then too many are not fundable. Spun out BioUtah to represent

Task Group Member.Usoe State Math Steering Committee Jan 2009 - Nov 2010Led the industry's three most impactful recommendations forward to the State Board of Education -- that didn't require funding after one year. 12th-grade math was the #1 proposal to help students in their senior year with needed critical thinking skills and Rigor. All three vital industry priorities were finally adopted when Sen. Millner legislated four years of Math Competency in 2015. These three were the most compelling of USOE's 43 proposed recommendations, including ten priorities that were advanced to be "accepted" by the board in December 2009. None of the three were acted on by the board in 2010, even though UTC leaders made the case in nine out of the ten months.UTC

Board MemberGovernors Board Of Economic Development 2001 - 2009UtahAppointed by Governors Huntsman and Leavitt to two four-year terms on the Governor's Board of Economic Development, representing the industry's Information Technology and Life Science growing and thriving sectors. Led Governor Huntsman's board endorsement supporting UTC's Board of Trustees high priority initiative to increase the High School Graduation requirements in Math, Science, and English by one year each. The State Board of Education had deliberated this for years and had yet to decide! It wasn't acceptable to continue to be in the bottom five states in the country in Math and Science and bottom 13 states in English. UTC's Public Policy Committee and Board provided the leadership over the past decade to advance Rigor and STEM statewide -- going into effect in 2011 for all graduates.
