About Richard Scholtz

Richard V. Scholtz, III holds a B.S. (University of Florida, Gainesville 1997), a M.E. (University of Florida, Gainesville 1999), and a Ph.D. (University of Florida, Gainesville 2003) all in Agricultural and Biological Engineering. He has been with the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Florida since 2003.Dr. Scholtz has taught a wide variety of lecture and laboratory engineering courses at the upper-division and graduate level. Currently, Dr. Scholtz teaches design, and the irrigation and drainage courses to Biological Engineering students, the irrigation systems and operations course to the Agricultural Operations Management students, and seminar and advanced soil and water engineering courses to graduate students. He has also served as a student mentor, and as an advisor to various capstone design teams. He has received recognition as an outstanding instructor, receiving the 2010 Teacher of the Year and the 2003 Young Educator Awards from Florida Section of American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers. Dr. Scholtz's research areas include experimental, field, and modeling investigations in the areas of natural resources conservation. Dr. Scholtz is the co-author of numerous journal articles and the text Mathematical Models of Crop Growth and Yield. Dr. Scholtz is a member-engineer of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), Sequoyah Fellow of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, an associate-member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and of Sigma-Xi.Dr. Scholtz’s goals are “to improve scientific understanding and develop engineered solutions and models to mitigate the conflict between the environment, agriculture and a growing populous,” and “to train competent engineers and scientists capable of formulating creative and appropriate solutions for problems and able to making significant positive impacts for society.”Specialties: The beneficial use and reuse of water and nutrients for both the urban and agricultural domains; hydraulic transportation and conveyance design; water resources engineering; and non-linear model development and analysis.
