Rob Sherman is VP, Policy and Deputy Chief Privacy Officer at Meta. He leads Meta's efforts to develop and implement policy solutions that promote privacy and responsibility across the company's diverse product portfolio, with a focus on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and mixed reality.Rob joined Meta in 2012 to establish the company’s privacy program, which is now a comprehensive company-wide effort involving thousands of employees. Today, Rob leads a team of policy experts who collaborate with product and engineering teams to ensure Meta's products are developed responsibly and in ways that benefit Meta’s global community. They work with experts around the world to incorporate cutting-edge policy solutions into Meta's products and develop pragmatic public policy approaches to new technology.During his time at the company, Rob's work has influenced nearly every major Meta product, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger and hardware like Meta Quest and Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. He leads AI policy at Meta, serving as the lead architect of the company’s policy approach to open sourcing AI technologies. He also helped drive novel privacy technologies like the world’s largest deployment of end-to-end encrypted messaging, privacy-enhancing technology for personalized ads, and “Why Am I Seeing This,” one of the first world-scale AI transparency tools.Rob is a sought-after speaker on innovation policy and privacy. He has spoken in global venues like the Aspen Ideas Festival, the World Economic Forum, Carnegie’s Global Technology Summit, IAPP, and RightsCon. He has represented Meta before governments on six continents and in multinational bodies like the W3C, UN, and global AI Safety Summits, and has lectured at universities around the world. He is an IAPP Westin Emeritus Fellow and a member of the FPF Center for AI’s Leadership Council.Rob believes that openness and inclusion are critical to building technology that benefits everyone, not just a select few. He co-founded with IBM the AI Alliance, a global organization with more than 100 members who collaborate to ensure AI is developed openly and that all developers have access to cutting-edge tools to deploy AI safely. He played a key role in Meta’s development of solutions to detect and mitigate bias in AI and to deploy computer vision to increase accessibility. Today his team leads the Llama Impact Grant program, which supports developers across the Global South in using open-source AI to serve the public good.
