Breadth-focused senior engineering leader working with dozens of engineering teams on strategy and scaling of cloud infrastructure for Kindle/Fire devices/apps. Drove evolving and simplifying the architecture across dozens of teams with roughly 40 critical services (and a large number of microservices underneath those) from content delivery, device instrumentation/diagnostics/monitoring, notifications and messaging queues, data privacy, security/DRM, software updates distribution, dynamic content, mobile infrastructure, etc. for scaling targets of tens of millions of connected consumer devices. Reporting directly to SVP and focused on working closely with business leaders to drive multi-year technical strategy for supporting product roadmaps.Drove technical clarity and strategy across dozens of Amazon engineering teams and third-party company acquisitions. Significant time focused on ensuring those teams were iterating towards solutions that complemented each other and the technical organizations worked effectively together in the face of entirely different priorities and frames of reference (hardware vs content vs cloud vs business app). Worked to build engineering consensus and empathy across occasionally divisive engineering teams. Worked with engineering teams to challenge existing technical and business assumptions to deliver products quicker, with higher availability/reliability, better time-to-market flexibility, and less operational complexity. Worked closely with VP/DE/SrPE technical leadership across the company to codify the undefined promotion path for IC engineers beyond PE. Spent significant time mentoring senior engineers to grow beyond SDE III/PE roles.

Depth-focused engineer developing core infrastructure software and services (predating AWS) for operating internal company-wide Amazon services including early service-oriented frameworks, distributed caching, service discovery, and complex website engine for integrating massively decentralized data sources. Distributed systems scaling targets for 100k's to millions of nodes. Performed hands-on operations and engineering support running Amazon's website during the initial transition from a monolith app to a platform that enabled moving to massively decentralized services years before this became considered an industry practice.

Built and evolved the first-generation social (community) features including Amazon wishlists, customer reviews, customer profiles, friend connections, purchase sharing, ListMania product list sharing, and inferred community-based product recommendations. As part of the Amazon Auctions skunkworks project was the lead engineer on Amazon Auctions bidding system. Initial years were focused on direct IC contributions as SDE III. In the last year, led two engineering teams as Senior Manager.

Loaned to AWS from Amazon's Distributed System Engineering group to help the team design the extremely scalable, distributed infrastructure behind AWS's Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Participated as member of the core technical system design reviews during the development of AWS's SQS and S3.

Technical consultant to scientists writing and operating parallel scientific applications for the Cray T3D/T3E supercomputers.

Software development intern at GALT, later acquired by Intuit as the technology basis for the Quicken.com Financial Network.

Built an online platform for students/faculty that allowed digital class registration, directories, campus news, etc., which competed with DEC's CWIS campus-wide information systems product (prior to WWW).
