Software Engineer (T4)Convoy Inc Nov 2018 - Apr 2020Seattle, Wa, UsConvoy is a B2B marketplace connecting shippers & carriers (i.e: truck drivers). Convoy's goal is to disrupt the incredibly old (100+ years) and unimaginably large ($800B in US) freight industry. My primary focus was customer experience on both sides of the marketplace.I spent a lot of time thinking about B2B configuration, specifically for operational contacts. In B2B, every customer has a different organizational shape. Some organize by region (i.e. For southwest loads, call Sarah), some by load type (i.e. For hazmat loads, email Frank), others by content (i.e. For soft drinks, use their TMS APIs). Large customers require a wide matrix of configuration to fully capture their preferences. It has been notoriously challenging to build a platform that (A) supports the long tail of options while still (B) being easy for users to work with and engineers to extend as new use-cases come in.There have been many iterations of such rules engines at Convoy (I built 4 of them). Lots of lessons learned along the way. The latest iteration is a platform I'm proud of. It supports the long tail of customers need while still being approachable by users and extendable by engineers.I also put lots of effort in location services. Leveraging GPS data from our mobile app to predict driver arrival time (working closely with data science). Leveraging location for triggering geofence events. The end goal is to pass these signals back to the shipper to build customer trust. In this 2-sided marketplace, one of the worst things you can do from a shipper's perspective is a "no call, no show." From a carrier's perspective, one of the worst things you can do is incessantly badger them with check calls, asking "what's your ETA?". Location services addresses both of these pain points. -
Software EngineerCoupang Oct 2016 - Nov 2018Seoul, Seoul, KrCoupang is the leading e-commerce platform in South Korea.- In 2015, Coupang received a $1B investment from SoftBank at a $5B evaluation.- In 2018, Softbank doubled-down with an additional $2B investment at a $9B evaluation.- In 2021, CPNG IPO'd on the NYSE with a market cap of $85B.The majority of my time was with Coupang Global, a team responsible for sourcing international products outside of Korea (US and Europe). Often operating as a 'start-up within a start-up.' Focused on rapid, yet sustainable growth, building for scale to support it.I also worked on fulfillment network optimizations within South Korea. I piloted an "Advanced Shipment Notification" program, focused on untangling the complexity that comes with massive inbound load.My favorite aspect of Coupang: No one can tell you how empowered you are to make change; it must be discovered through passion and perseverance. https://coupang.com -
Software Development EngineerAmazon Web Services Aug 2015 - Oct 2016Seattle, Wa, UsAWS CloudTrail is a managed AWS service responsible for capturing and delivering customers' AWS API activity logs to a centralized location (S3). Our team was all about the process: leveraging agile tactics to work fast, stay clean, and deploy often. My favorite aspect of CloudTrail: we used AWS to build AWS. Working at planetary scale, we expanded our service leveraging built-to-last business & design principles. Short-term pains were well worth long term success.https://aws.amazon.com/cloudtrail/ -
