Nuclear Engineer, Nuclear Reactor DesignLos Alamos National Laboratory Sep 2000 - May 2004Los Alamos, Nm, UsPerformed nuclear, thermal, and thermo-hydraulic design analyses for various fission reactor cores. Performed radiation monitor system testing, and site vulnerability surveys and analysis for the installation of radiation monitoring systems at international crossings, including border crossings, international airports, rail yards, and shipping ports (Russia, Ukraine). Provided lectures and demonstrations concerning radiation portal monitoring to domestic and international customs and border crossings officials at the Department of Energy HAMMER Training Facility. -
Visiting Assistant Professor, Nuclear EngineeringTexas A&M University 1997 - 2000College Station, Tx, Us• Taught undergraduate and the graduate courses in Nuclear Reactor Design. • Taught graduate course in “black-box” modeling of linear dynamical systems, “System Identification”. • Faculty Advisor for the Engineering Scholars • Space and Propulsion - Research: o Space power and propulsion. The concepts exploit nanoscale capillary-thermodynamic phenomena to passively drive the working fluid circulation in low-power application heat engines and rocket engines. o Machine Learning and filtering algorithm (implemented as recurrent neural networks) as a near-optimal low-level component for fault-tolerant control, to increase safety and reuse of space propulsion systems. -
Visiting ProfessorIsas/Jaxa Oct 1998 - Apr 1999Developed specifications for capillary-pumped heat-engines and rocket engines.

Simulator Software Engineer, Nuclear TrainingLuminant 1987 - 1988Dallas, Tx, Us• Supported construction phase of the Comanche Peak SES PWR.• Over-hauled and validated and verified all of the reactor operator training control-room simulator software models (FORTRAN). The company had a dispute with the simulator manufacturer, Singer-Link, resulting in a loss of support from the manufacturer and an incomplete real-time training simulator. I was hired to discover and correct problems in the simulator software modeling, to validate simulator behaviors and documentation, and to provide documentation controls. • Simulated in FORTRAN all core neutronics (PRK) and thermal hydraulic behaviors, radiological release modeling, plant thermal-hydraulic transient behaviors, relay and bus-fault logic, and control system modeling for the control room simulator • Validated and verified the simulated electrical buses to plant drawings and behaviors, redrew all plant drawings in a simplified form on computers (for V&V configuration control purposes) detailing all electrical bus interactions and relay logic, and verifying all control system parameters in the primary and balance-of-plant. (FORTRAN) -
Reactor Thermal Hydraulics Engineer, Transient AnalysisDetroit Edison Company - Fermi 2 1984 - 1988Detroit, Michigan, Us• Supported construction and Start-Up and Test Phase, with access to all areas of the plant, including the control room. Reviewed FSAR. Contributed to the Functional Descriptions of plant systems. • Developed thermal-hydraulic models of plant systems, including the NSSS (BWR/4) and the Balance-of-Plant (BOP) systems using RETRAN and FORTRAN. Estimated behavior of NSSS dynamic behaviors during Test-Phase. Modeled LOCA dynamical behaviors and radiological source terms. Walked-down the plant, inside the Protected Area, in order to develop detailed understanding of systems integration. BOP and control systems modeling was accomplished using the Laplace transfer function modules provided in RETRAN. • Used RETRAN models to estimate the thermal-hydraulic transient behaviors of the NSSS and to analyze special engineering modifications in BOP, particularly concerning the feedwater system, which was unique to Fermi 2. • Developed real-time data acquisition software to read and interpret pipe strain gauges in the control room during initial Start-Up. Such data acquisition implementation was accomplished under severe time constraints during Start-Up testing and required the recoding of undocumented and unfamiliar software in General Electric GETARS system. The GETARS system was implemented on HP data acquisition computers and used a special FORTRAN version called HP Real-Time FORTRAN. • Led verification and validation of BWR core neutronic and thermo-hydraulic models (FORTRAN) for the reactor control-room training simulator.
