About Ruben Filter

If you aim for scalability, aim for simplicity.Throughout my life I have been fascinated by technology, testing the limits of automation. From PC board design, embedded C, to server side performance critical code, network integrations and BI dashboards I have worked on successful projects in a large variety of contexts. During my career as electronic and software engineer, I have often seen the power of simple solutions. I have also come to appreciate how hard it is to make something simple enough. In Africa we have unique ICT engineering challenges and when we find solutions to these challenges, they can scale well past the African continent. Projects I've worked on include low power prepaid watermeters, automated meter readings, telco gateways, mobile payment integrations, business intelligence dashboards, transactional record management and billing reports, GIS operational analysis, automated resource planning and mobile workforce management. This range of ICT projects has exposed me to many technologies, but always the common thread is that the systems are managed by humans. Even at full server automation in a dark, cold server room, a human is bound to read your service log when things go wrong.When I consult on architecture, integration, implementation or at code-review level I always keep this in mind: "Humans are in control. So keep it simple and automate everything."
