About Ruben Schmidt, Phd
I work as an imaging facility and laboratory manager at Utrecht University’s Biology Imaging Center, which houses over 30 high-end imaging systems. Here, I ensure that researchers have access to the highest quality imaging capabilities of both commercial and custom-built systems. In addition to monitoring and optimizing system performance, I train and advise users on experimental design and sample preparation techniques, helping them select the best microscopy methods for their needs. I balance my role in imaging facility and laboratory management with postdoctoral research, both performing and supporting developmental biology studies with a strong focus on genetics and live imaging of C. elegans, cultured cells, organoids and more.

Position as lab manager and postdoctoral researcher in the developmental biology division at Utrecht University, combined with microscopy management in our Biology Imaging Center. This facility houses more than 30 microscopes, which include laser (re-)scanning and spinning disk confocals, TIRF, STED, light sheet and wide field setups. As a PhD student at Utrecht University in the Akhmanova and van den Heuvel labs I studied cell division in a developmental context by combining genetic engineering with optogenetics and high-resolution microscopy.
