About Ruben Van Der Merwe
After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce focused in Economics and Business Management, I've gained project portfolio, investment, risk analysis, and cost management experience, in the Financial Services, Rail Manufacturing, Platinum Mining Sector, and currently, Procurement and Contract Management experience in Coal Mining.Throughout these sectors, I've had the opportunity to work on a variety of different projects categorising from Small to Mega, and Concept to Execution phase. I am extremely passionate about the study and field of Cost Engineering and aim to continue gaining more in-depth experience to contribute and give back to the industry going forward through the role of Board Secretariat at AACEI South Africa.A few Rules that I strive to live by1) Failing doesn't make you a failure, failing and not carrying on does. Failing is 'n temporary learning curve, not a permanent point of destination.2) Don't ever give up. There's always a way. And if there isn't, you can always make one. Our capabilities end at the point of our maximum imagination, dream big.3) Always work hard, be willing to learn and constantly aim to push your limits in doing what you love, and ultimately becoming great at it.4) Making a difference in people's lives through happiness, inspiring them, and spreading hope on the topic that anything is possible if you truly set your mind to it.5) Find passion in whatever you do. It makes the journey so much more interesting. Becoming one with something which you are passionate about, is a much more sustainable way of living and you unconsciously put in the extra effort, providing a much greater chance of being successful in whatever you do.6) Coming from a sport background, I can understand and appreciate the principle of what is required to push one's abilities to the very limit and that there are no shortcuts. You have to do what is required to reach the top level of any profession.7) Be kind, smile and say thank you. It might just make somebody's day.
