Barista And Cashier
Legislative Intern At The Office Of Assemblywoman Linda S. Carter
In my role, I was involved with constituent services, organization and civic engagement in the Plainfield township. I handled unemployment cases and scheduled meetings for constituents to meet with the Assemblywoman. I compiled a list of 75+ potential community partners and created flyers and social media content for upcoming community events. I developed the bill tracker, in which I inserted the status of each of 250+ bills that the Assemblywoman sponsored. I also developed civics education curriculum for the Assemblywoman to use at her civic engagement workshops.
Education Intern
My main task is curriculum outreach. Each week, I reach out to various schools and political organizations all over the country to create partnerships for the Institute.
Policy Fellow
A highly engaging experience with many components. I attended civic engagement workshops, policy debates and collaborated with other like-minded individuals to work on mock policy briefs. I drafted my own policy brief titled "A Deep Dive Into the Gold Standard Restoration Act".
State Treasurer
After a rigorous election process composed of an application, interview, and speech, I have joined the State Officer team of the NJASC. The NJASC is the longest running Student Council Association in the Nation and hosts over 3000 student leaders and council advisors at each of its 4 annual conferences. I have worked with my fellow Officers to organize our Spring Awards Program at Six Flags and our three day overnight Leadership Training Conference (LTC) at The College of New Jersey. At these events I directed leadership and public speaking workshops for over 300 students. I also initiated our NJASC merchandise store. I led the effort to organize, advertise and ultimately sell both new and antique shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts, water bottles and sunglasses. Apart from conferences, I attend monthly meetings to discuss ideas to promote student council engagement in New Jersey. I also helped my team select this year's State Charity, Hugs for Brady, that we will be donating our Conference proceeds to.I am the first person from my school to run and be elected to this position.
Fellow
I was one of eight fellows selected to be a part of the New Jersey Leadership Program, a nonprofit organization that promotes South Asian representation in politics. As part of the program, I was placed in an internship at my local legislative office.I was highly engaged in the speakership series of the program. Each weekend, I drafted 10-12 thought provoking questions to ask speakers about their work in politics, advocacy and media. At the end of the program, I presented a capstone pertaining to expanding veterans' healthcare.
Youth Advisor
Tom Malinowski's Youth Advisory Council is a caucus of high schoolers who advise the Congressman on issues they care about both nationally and within their district. In my first year on the council, I was a member of the Climate Crisis Committee. I worked with fellow members to draft a bill that reduces capital gains tax for investing in environmental-social-governance (ESG) friendly companies. I ideated a system that took input from 12 ESG rating agencies to determine each company's ESG grade. This became one of the core mechanisms of the bill. Our bill was selected by the Congressman to be forwarded to its actual respective committee in the US Congress. We received feedback from Representative Sean Casten. In my second year, I took on a leadership role in the Youth Foreign Affairs Committee. I came up with the bill idea to end US assistance to foreign military and police units that violated human rights. I researched previous instances of violations to incorporate into the bill's purpose section. Apart from bill writing, I was selected this term to represent the Congressman at a town-hall with US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. I also worked for the Malinowski Campaign by canvassing and phone-banking all over Union County.
Treasurer
I helped to plan the event by fundraising and allocating funds to decorations, concessions and recording technology. As a leader of my school's TEDx Club, I edited speakers' talks and coached their public speaking skills. I also initiated my districts first Public Speaking Olympics: a series of verbal games and challenges that engaged ~40 club members aside from the event speakers.
Speaker
I presented a TEDx Talk titled "Civics and Youth: How to know your Democracy" at the 2022 TEDxYouth@UCVTS event. In my talk, I highlighted the lack of Civics Education in American schools and how it can be expanded through discourse and debate.
Delegate
I represented Syria in the Social-Humanitarian-Cultural Committee during the YMCA Model United Nations Conference. Here, I collaborated with various Civic-Minded Individuals to research and draft policy that mediated the refugee crisis. I participated enthusiastically in caucus debate and learned to draft amendments.
Delegate
I held the role of a Youth Legislator in the YMCA's Youth and Government bill-debate committee. Here, I drafted and presented a bill that expands mail-in voting in New Jersey. I also presented arguments for and against bills pertaining to offshore wind-energy, the use of nitrous oxide in dentistry, and extending voting rights to incarcerated citizens.
