The Southern Center for Human Rights is working for equality, dignity, and justice for people impacted by the criminal legal system in the Deep South. SCHR fights for a world free from mass incarceration, the death penalty, the criminalization of poverty, and racial injustice.

The Law School awards approximately twelve Graduate Fellowships to incoming students each academic year. Because Admissions Committee members identify potential candidates for Graduate Fellowships from our pool of admitted students, there is no formal application for the Fellowship. The Admissions Committee selects potential candidates based on excellent entering academic indicators, demonstrated capacity for leadership, individual accomplishments, history of commitment to public interest/social justice, likelihood of contribution to the educational environment and to the legal profession, and their identifiable connection to or interest in working with populations that have traditionally been underserved by the law or underrepresented in the profession.Graduate Fellows are awarded a stipend of $10,000 plus in-state tuition. In addition to the stipend and in-state tuition waiver, Graduate Fellows are also given the opportunity to work as research assistants and/or teaching assistants on faculty scholarship projects (up to a maximum limit of 225 hours). Fellows are often matched with projects in their own area of interest and thereby gain immeasurable experience through this work. The Fellowship will continue throughout the three years of law school, as long as a Graduate Fellow remains an enrolled student at the Law School and maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above each semester.

The 6th Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees that the accused has the right to an attorney in all criminal cases. The Law Office of the Public Defender provides legal representation to those unable to afford an attorney in all criminal cases in DeKalb County.We promote equal justice, fairness and respect for all people in the judicial system through effective and excellent legal advocacy. We are tenacious advocates for every client. In so doing, we safeguard the rights of all by providing exemplary legal representation.

Interns work under the direct supervision of CCR attorneys and are given high-quality assignments and periodic feedback. Interns also participate in weekly educational seminars. Topics range from litigation skills, theories of social change, and guest lectures by noted local organizers & activists. Interns' responsibilities may include: legal research & writing for domestic and international litigation, factual investigation, client & witness interviews, policy/legislative research, and participation in client and community meetings. In addition, students are provided opportunities to attend court proceedings, community and client meetings, view films about social justice issues, and attend other law related panels and events.Ella Baker interns work at the Center for Constitutional Rights' office in NYC on cases in CCR's three docket areas: Government Misconduct/Racial Justice, Guantanamo Global Justice Initiative and International Human Rights. In the past, students have worked on cases involving solitary confinement, discriminatory policing practices, social and economic rights, immigrants' rights, U.S. detention and targeted killing practices, universal jurisdiction over international human rights abuses, gender and LGBTI justice domestically and internationally. Students also have the opportunity to work with CCR's Education and Outreach staff on various advocacy campaigns. Students at CCR experience the unique opportunities and challenges of doing social justice lawyering at a national organization.

Youth Organizing to Save Our Streets (YO S.O.S.) trains young people to become peer educators and community organizers in the movement to end gun violence.Through a combination of hands-on workshops and community organizing opportunities over the course of 8 months, YO S.O.S. participants develop fundamental leadership skills including public speaking, team work, creative problem solving, emotional regulation, networking, event planning, resume writing, and campaign strategies among others. Participants who successfully complete the program receive a stipend, community service credit, and assistance in securing paid summer employment or internship positions.
