About Ruby Cortner

With over 25 years of teaching and leading in educational settings from elementary through college, I am committed to helping students become productive global citizens. My goal is for them to possess an awareness of the world, to make decisions with care based on knowledge they have acquired through objective sources, and to communicate effectively with others based on this experience. Likewise, I am dedicated to helping beginner teachers navigate the world of teaching, creating a safe place for them to learn from seasoned educators, while also sharing their talents. Whether working with students or faculty, I try to foster an environment of mutual trust and respect. My achievements include University of Berkeley Grant to assist in a Neolithic Archeological Dig in Germany; Klingenstein Fellowship to interview Tibetan Buddhist refugees in northern India; Klingenstein Fellowship to study Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Tibet, and Nepal; Earthwatch grant to study Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in Jerusalem, and World Leadership School Collaboration in Belize. My recent professional development includes Arbinger Institute, Project Based Learning (PBL Works), and GOA Center for Professional Learning.I am proficient in Google's G Suite, Zoom, Loom, Prezi, EdPuzzle, Canva, and FlipGrid among other teaching platforms.

-Was in charge of making sure the core subjects: English, Latin, science, and history were in alignment-Team taught units such as Archaeology, during which each teacher was responsible for lessons corresponding to his or her discipline. (For instance, did lessons on the religions/myths of the different civilizations we covered: China, India, Olmec/Maya, while science teacher taught a lesson on methods of dating the different artifacts associated with those ancient cultures. Because the school is located in Los Angeles, took a field trip to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which houses impressive permanent collections of the ancient cultures of China, India, and Olmec/Maya. Each was student responsible for sketching an assigned artifact; upon returning to school, students would replicate artifacts using clay and would bury them for the next year's class.
