Mariarano, Madagascar

This role has allowed me to gain a whole host of skills, such as organising and scheduling through Microsoft Excel creating a colour-coordinated and time-scale spreadsheet of school activities ranging from surveys to lectures. Leadership in the expedition and surveys on a range of taxonomic groups, for example, leading botany forest plots and a mangrove seed planting project for students. Science communication by providing lectures on Madagascar's biodiversity, endemism, biogeography, conservation, culture, and long-term ecological monitoring programs. While also providing the lectures on Madagascar's biodiversity, I was able to share my knowledge in a less formal setting by having conversations with school students.

Mariarano, Madagascar

I spent 6 weeks in Mariarano, Madagascar - Operation Wallacea’s terrestrial site - working and learning alongside PhD student Coral Chell and her team. Following 5 different groups of Coquerels Sifaka (Propithecus coquereli), a species on the IUCN Red List. Where each group were all within varying levels of anthropogenic disturbance. I collected data on their ranging patterns, using handheld GPS tracking, and observing their activity budget behaviours (resting, feeding, movement, and social). My dissertation specified in the effects of human disturbed landscapes on the home range size of the sifaka, where I taught myself QGIS to make minimum convex polygons depicting their range sizes.Alongside this I have had experience in bird mist netting, invertebrate and herpetological studies.
