- Performed research work on synthesis, under nitrogen atmosphere, and characterization of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), which are used to mimic the active site of Cytochrome P450 for a specific substrate synthesized- Gained experience in techniques and instruments used in the laboratory, such as: - Liquid-Liquid Extraction: separated the organic phase from the aqueous (water) phase of the substrate synthesized by using Chloroform and removed excess water by adding a suitable solid drying agent (i.e. Sodium or Magnesium Sulfate) to the liquid followed by its removal by gravity filtration - Freeze-Pump-Thaw by Schlenk Line: Placed polymer synthesis under nitrogen atmosphere by freezing mixture with liquid nitrogen, vacuuming the air out, thawing the mixture, and, lastly, pumping nitrogen gas into the mixture - Rotary Evaporation (Rotavap): evaporated solvent from polymer/specified substrate synthesized - Silica Gel Column Chromatography: separated and purified the specified substrate synthesized - TLC: determined the best solvent to separate and purify the specified substrate synthesized - UV-Vis Spectroscopy: detected whether the specified substrate was able to be bound and removed from the porphyrin metal center - Vacuum Filtration: collected and washed the solid polymer synthesized - NMR: detected whether the specified substrate was synthesized - Fluorescence Spectroscopy: detected whether the specified substrate was able to be removed and rebound onto the porphyrin metal center of the polymer synthesized (MIPs) - Read and researched articles relating to the research conducted - Maintained accurate records of research conducted and cleanliness of bench/work area
