I invented the space known as medical tourism, sending patients abroad for medical care. I grew the company from a start-up in 2002 and sold it in 2011 only to repurchase it in 2013. When I started the company, Google Adwords was only 1 year old, and the concept of SEO and social media did not exist. I was the original lean start-up. We grew to 15 employees and over $2 million in billings by 2006 while still operating in my garage, real office soon followed. I went through the whole VC thing at a time when funding was not so readily available. We were featured in Time, Forbes, CNN, and over 200 others but none of that mattered when we tried to raise money. We were the first to offer outsourced healthcare to US companies and was featured in Nightline about this story. Eventually I sold it, and found myself missing it. When the company was going to go public i fought against it and re-acquired the company, but this time I was not so lucky. they company was mired in problems and eventually collapsed in quite the ugly fashion, but undaunted I am trying resurrect it. -

Founding CtoAmerican Apparel Oct 1999 - Sep 2002Montreal And Los AngelesI was the first CTO at American Apparel, back when it was still working on Filemaker and helped set the technical direction of the company. When I started there was no google adwords, there was no such thing as social media. I wanted our tech foundation to be Java but in 1999 Sun Microsystems and Java were about to go bankrupt, as was Apple (and Oracle had not bought them yet). PHP was just starting out and Ruby was this concept in Japan, and so I chose the .net framework. The site I built without the benefit of any existing frameworks still works and exists to this day, a testament to the incredible team I put together. On the internet marketing side of things, we had to invent as we went along. We started with AOL and Yahoo marketing, Bill Gross introduced us to goto.com with its Cost Per Click model in 2001 and then Google in 2002 (where the word Tshirt was ours for $0.05). We tried different things that we could afford and the most effective was emails.On the enterprise side of things, we created systems that integrated yarn to shelf. We bought spun yarn which we made into fabric inhouse, coloured with 3rd parties (because dyeing is an environmental regulation bear) and cut and sewed at our factories in the US and then sold online and eventually to our retail stores. I left just before AA went public as I did not want to spend a 1/3rd of my life on compliance and SOX, but oh what fun it was. -

Then one day someone found our name in the phone book and thought we were in the Y2K business and I did not want to correct them. I created the Millennium Bug Compliance Kit, which was found in over 70% of all PC in the world (how's that for open source contribution long before it was a thing). The company went public trading symbol PINC.OTC.BB and I had no idea what the hell I was doing (I was 26 years old for gawdsakes!) In 1999, I created the ecommkit (kinda like a pre-cursor to magento) but my board was not interested so I declared at an industry conference that Y2K was bullshit and that got me tossed out of this company, so I brought my eCommerce skills to American Apparel.
