One of my first jobs out of university was an intern at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. What was meant to be a 6-month position ended up being a four year stint, as I soon moved from intern to manager of the electronic archives and website -- back in the early days of websites in South Africa. After the TRC, I moved to Michigan and worked on the SA Heritage and Technology Programme at Matrix, a humanities-based technology centre at Michigan State University. I continued to work on their projects when I returned to Cape Town in 2003, and set up a consultancy to help non-profits navigate technology and the internet. With a grant from the Open Society Foundation, I established the Nonprofit Network, an online resource to assist nonprofits with their digital communications, and over the course of 3 years I wrote four e-books on developing, implementing, and evaluating digital communications strategies for nonprofits, and produced a survey on how South African nonprofits use social media.I am passionate about the use of tech and online media for social activism. I hold a BSc (Information Systems).In 2021 I launched my passion-project, Hashtag Nonprofit, a digital magazine website for the South African nonprofit sector: http://www.hashtagnonprofit.org Hashtag Nonprofit is now an NPC and PBO, with the aim of amplifying the positive impact of South African nonprofit organisations by using digital platforms to provide resources, training, and professional expertise to support those who work in or serve nonprofits.I continue to provide digital communications and website development services to nonprofit organisations.
