For the Research we firstly collected PIP implants explanted from patients in different European countries and from different batches of production;- Evaluated the micro-structural features of the shells by contrast microscopy to better understand quality issues. - Compared the microscopy results with those obtained using different analytical techniques, among which attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FT-IR), head space gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HS-GC–MS) and GC–MS in direct injection mode. The results have been compared with those obtained from the analyses of prostheses from other manufactures and their relevance discussed in the light of the most recently published analytical and clinical studies on PIP implants;We attempted to correlate the obtained analytical results with the explantation outcome (current health status) in our small cohort of patients with PIP implants.Main techniques and skills:- Phase contrast microscopyusin Eclipse TS 100, Nikon- ATR-FT-IR analysis using an Alpha spectrometer, Bruker Optics- GC-MS analysis using a Trace GC Ultra GasChromatograph coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer Trace DSQ- Review of the literature
