The DG Murray Trust (DGMT) is a private foundation that aims to create an ethical and enabling environment where human needs and aspirations are met; and every person is given the proper opportunity to fulfil his or her potential, for both personal benefit and for that of the wider community. Embrace is an incubated project of the DGMT. Embrace is a national movement with an ambitious goal – to ensure every mother is supported from the start. We do this through inspiration, mobilisation and building meaningful connections for and among mothers and mother-supporters.

After the birth of my son in 2015, I left the University of Cape Town to pursue a more creative and flexible path. Since January 2016, I have been offering teaching, writing and research services to various clients, including the following: − Adventure Clubs: developing and nurturing relationships with new partners to enable them to offer custom family- and child-focused ‘adventures’ in South Africa’s major cities.− Cornerstone Institute: developing and teaching the online undergraduate courses titled ‘Introduction to Sociology’ and ‘Diversity Studies’− DG Murray Trust: researching and writing materials for the third of their Create Change series, focusing on youth development and employment − Harlequin Foundation: facilitating strategic planning and vision development for the eMzantsi project of the foundation− School for International Training: teaching and supervising the academic research conducted by visiting American undergraduate students− University of Cape Town’s Democratic Governance and Rights Unit: developing and delivering leadership training for participants of their Women Pioneers Programme− University of Cape Town’s Environmental and Geographical Sciences department: developing and delivering training on teaching within diverse contexts for departmental teaching staff− University of Cape Town’s Global Citizenship Platform: developing and teaching the co-curricular short courses titled ‘Service, Citizenship and Social Justice’ and ‘Global Debates, Local Voices’

I managed the operations and the staff of the student records service and was responsible for key records-related functions including editing and producing the annual set of University student handbooks, managing and producing assigned graduation ceremonies, and managing and co-ordinating the short course catalog and record.

The DG Murray Trust (DGMT) is a private foundation that aims to create an ethical and enabling environment where human needs and aspirations are met; and every person is given the proper opportunity to fulfil his or her potential, for both personal benefit and for that of the wider community. As a portfolio manager for the Connection to Opportunity portfolio, I was responsible for managing the distribution and investment of 20% of the Trust’s annual distribution budget. The portfolio works specifically with initiatives that aim to facilitate successful transitions into productive livelihoods for young people.
