I have delved in multidisciplinarity before it became fashionable. The seeds of multiple perspectives of design were sown with my training in Architecture from School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi and Industrial design from Industrial Design Center, IIT Bombay. Thereafter I worked in the areas of Architecture, Interior design, Product design, Visual Merchandising and Content writing for consultancies (her own design firm called ‘EYE” and others), corporates, NGOs and magazines. Somewhere in 2000, the teaching bug bit me. I have been associated with premier Architecture and Design schools in the capacity of a guest faculty before I joined National Institute of Fashion Technology as a full-time faculty in 2005. I always try and connect my varied experience with classroom tasks. I have handled many academic administrative posts in NIFT, notable amongst which are Chairperson of Department of Fashion Communication and Chairperson of the Masters of Design program. My current position is Campus Academic Coordinator (Academic Head) of the Mumbai Campus. My core teaching areas are Design Methodology, Design Research, Interactive spaces, Design History and Sustainable systems. I have presented papers in these areas in prestigious forums.I believe that teaching is a creative process. Design thinking has to be applied to design teaching as well. Based on the objectives of the curriculum I spend a great deal of time devising creative assignments and methods of delivery. It is my belief that if you layer the design brief with enough challenges for the students, their learning is enhanced. Like any concerned human being, I was attracted to the concept of sustainability but was unsure how designers could use their unique skills to solve sustainability issues. In the process of doing my PhD, I developed a nuanced understanding of the subject. My endevour was to develop a versatile model that is relevant in any domain of design. The research contribution of my thesis was a conjecture-analysis model for integrating sustainability in design pedagogy. I live in Navi Mumbai with my filmmaker husband and two children. We practice as sustainable a lifestyle as an urban living will allow.
