I am Professor with joint appointments in Bouve College of Health Science and Khoury College of Computer Science at Northeastern University and a track record of entrepreneurial success. Over my two-decade tenure at Northeastern University, I have founded and led the Voice of Women (VOxx) Lab (previous the Communication Analysis and Design Lab), and the ASTRiC (Applied Speech Technology Research and Innovation Commercialization) center, and Co-founded the doctoral program in Personal Health Informatics. Our interdisciplinary group conducts empirical research on speech and voice which is then applied to developing novel technologies to detect and treat speech impairments or enhance communication success. As CEO & Founder of VocaliD INC, I led the creation of unique synthetic voice personalities which reshaped text-to-audio applications. VocaliD was acquired in 2022 by Veritone where I served as VP of Voice AI and Accessibility, driving innovation in generative AI across our media, talent acquisition and government and regulated business units. As a health technology thought leader, I am a frequent speaker and panelist at national and international meetings, am a fellow of the Aspen Institute of Health Innovators and been featured in TED, NPR, MIT Tech Review, BBC, and more. I am also a fierce advocate for ethical technology advancement and serve as a board member, advisor and/or investor to startups and non-profit organizations.
