I am passionate about the environment, the challenges of sustainable development and the future of South Africa. I have a strong commitment to the Waterberg region in particular, being a fifth generation resident of this challenging but incredibly diverse and beautiful area.I have over 10 years’ experience in business as well as environmental and social development in the Waterberg, with core expertise in biosphere management, sustainable development, rural livelihood and local economy analysis, and conservation planning. Having gained substantive fieldwork experience in Sekhukhuneland and the Bakenberg villages while researching rural livelihood and land reform issues at doctorate level, I have gained widespread practical experience of the socio-economic and environmental situation in rural South Africa. This experience relates to my position as chair of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve since 2002 and through undertaking freelance consulting assignments regarding the local Wildlife Industry, Conservation Planning and Developmental Design. I have project managed various projects relating not only to the development of community (PDI) owned and operated tourism products, but also to local skills development of unemployed youth and approaches to counter rhino poaching. I also manage my own tourism and farming businesses in the Waterberg.
