I valued my time serving America in the military. Like many officers, I was given a high degree of leadership responsibility at a relatively young age. As an R&D program manager, leading a team building a technically advanced spy plane system, I travelled the world. I faced new challenges and obstacles every day. I loved the demands of working with brilliant people and moving them toward an important outcome. As a husband and a father, however, I realized that I was asking a lot from my family to endure my constant absences and a life of routinely relocating. So I went to work for a drug company that many of my fellow veterans were finding success with. The great thing about my career in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries is that I can still face different challenges and obstacles every day, work with brilliant people, and never get bored. I still move people towards an important outcome. I approach biotech sales as a fellow fan of science and technology with the customer; as someone who daily challenges them to understand and make full use of the latest advances in their field. I have also learned to challenge customers from the HUMAN standpoint: How do you communicate with patients to get to a diagnosis for my product? Working in a smaller, flatter organization like Gilead has been professionally rewarding. People are called upon to regularly work cross-functionally in the organization. For experienced folks like me, that means we get to use many of the skills we have developed, as well as get challenged to develop new ones. As an example- our product's training department only has 1 person in it. That means every time there is a training event, a few members of the sales team get actively involved. A similar situation exists with the marketing team. The innovation in our industry is breathtaking, and I'm proud to continue as an advocate. Hospital Sales. Thought Leader Developer. Rare Disease.
