Vp Of Research OperationsUniversity Of South Alabama 2007 - 2012Mobile, AlThe VPR office oversaw all activities related to the development of R&D proposals from 7 university colleges. Through training, effective communication with funding agencies, building multidisciplinary research teams, the R&D expenditures doubled in three years from $27M to $54M. This rapid growth of R&D expenditures allowed the campus to become reclassified by the Carnegie Corporation as one with High Research activity putting it on par with other major research universities in the state (e.g. Auburn, and Alabama). The VPR office was responsible for all R&D compliance, training, intellectual property management ($4M in royalties/yr.). The VPR directly oversaw the corporate partnership campus (1,000 employees), the University Research Corporation ($8M annual revenue), and was the institution's representative for all inter-institutional research facilities such as the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Alabama EpSCORE and Alabama Launchpad. -

The VPR was the spokesperson for the state's public institutions as it related to state, national and international priorities for R&D. The VPR assembled and assisted multi-disciplanry teams seek millions of dollars of new support and organized capital campaign efforts to build new facilities such as the North Carolina Research Campus ($1B), the Coastal Studies Institute ($32M), the Bioprocessing Training and Education Center ($36M). Intellectual property management was developed for all campuses by initiating a private/public partnership with Seed Stage, LLC that handled all IP matters for campuses whose offices were simply underfunded/understaffed to handle the emergence of faculty innovations. Under the VPR, R&D expenditures rose from $500M to $1B in less than 5 years. All inter-institutional centers and institutes reported to the VPR office, such as: UNC Arboretum, Coastal Studies Institute, Highland Biological Field Station, Center for Craft, Creativity and Design, Sea Grant, etc. All UNC R&D compliance and audit controls were overseen by the VPR and had to be reported to the UNC Board of Governors. -
