Appliance Solutions Group:Founding member of the NetBackup Appliances engineering team, involved in nearly all aspects of development. Primarily responsible for appliance platform software installation and upgrade, and backup over SAN. Expert diagnose of complex issues and go-to resource for the larger engineering team as well as back-line support, as well as mentoring to the wider engineering team. All this was done while working remotely from Ohio, with engineers and Product Managers in California, Minnesota, India and China.• Designed and implemented the upgrade from SLES 10 to SLES 11 for 5,000+ in field NetBackup Appliances that required no external storage devices and no user actions, and a fool proof rollback in the event of upgrade failure. Support calls from this extremely complex upgrade were much lower than previous simpler upgrades, and remedial cleanup action required by support was almost completely eliminated.• Reduced the size of the upgrade by 80% (15GB to 3GB), eliminating a primary customer pain point and also reducing the time to upgrade significantly.• Provided the architectural vision for transitioning 10,000+ field deployed appliances from SLES to RHEL, starting with completely revamping the appliance install to reduce inter-component dependencies and improve cohesion, thus ultimately greatly simplifying future upgrades and allowing future deployments to hybrid clouds.• Lead on NetBackup Appliance SAN Client (backup over SAN) feature. Worked closely with the NetBackup dev team and integrating the software stack, from kernel drivers to user space code, into the NetBackup Appliance software stack, all whilst simplifying the user experience. Worked closely with product management to chart out and plan the future of backup over SAN.• Became the resident expert in nearly all things NetBackup appliance related. Provided help and mentoring to direct team, extended team, other product teams and back-line support.
