About Russell Hanson

I am a fifth year PhD Candidate in the Lab of Dr. David Goldhamer. As a lab we work on both the development of muscle and the rare disease Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). My research's central goal is identifying the interactions between muscle resident stem cells fibro/adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) and satellite cells (SC) in FOP. These interactions could lead to a fundamental understanding of muscle loss and impaired muscle regeneration in FOP.

    During my time at Jounce Therapeutics I worked in pre-clinical development supporting multiple teams in an effort to move drugs from the developmental pipeline into the clinical pipeline. My main focus was creating and running assays that supplemented safety data and allowed us to create and submit New Drug Applications for regulatory approval. I helped to develop a variety of assays using various techniques, I also worked with various model systems, inducing the Cynomolgous Macaque, Human, Mouse, Rat, and a wide range of various cell lines such as Jurkat, HEK, L929, and MEF. In this position I gained extensive experience preparing, developing, and running flow cytometry based assays. I became highly skilled in flow cytometry and the DIVA software, I have successfully run large multi color panels (13 fluorophores). I have a strong understanding of the capabilities and disadvantages of the Flow cytometery and how it can be applied to various assays or to answer various scientific questions. In this position I also furthered my experience with cell culture and maintained multiple cell lines at any given time and learned how to work with blood and various immune cell isolation techniques.

    Responsibilities included research and development of next generation applications of the Isolight system. I was specifically tasked with synthesizing a lysis buffer releasing hydrogel in order to create an intracellular protein pathway capture assay.We successfully developed and modified an ELISA to capture protein secretions of single cells, which was compatible with the automated Isolight system. I collected data and analyzed the intracellular assay to make further decisions as well as used scientific literature to advance research.A major responsibility of mine was culturing, maintaining , and preparing mammalian cell lines including human T cells and primary glioblastoma cell lines. Isoplexis was also a start up i quickly and effectively learned any function required and applied the skills to support the company with any goal necessary.

    As a Data Analytics Assistant I collected current research on various disease of interest in order to create an in house database for company research use.I tracked recent publications as well as company releases in order to stay current on research and activity on diseases and drug development. As a Biology Intern I ran the AP50 Hemolysis assay for the company, taking newly synthesized drug samples and testing their ability to inhibit the hemolysis through the complement system. I used rabbit blood and human serum to measure hemolysis amounts on a 96 well plate, I would analyze the results on the spectrophotometer and with Prism software, and report the results to superiors.
