After spending many years working in the accounting field, and working part-time as a self-taught and ad-hoc programmer for in-house projects, my interest in software development became a growing passion; I went back to night school to begin studying Computer Science.Upon excelling in some early classes, I was recommended by an instructor to a local software company that fortuitously developed software within an accounting-related area (specifically, Activity-Based Costing - ABC.) After I was hired, it took me several years of working full-time in software engineering while going to school part-time in the evenings, but I finally achieved my bachelor's degree in Computer Science in the spring of 2006. Senior Software EngineerBusiness Objects, An Sap Company Jan 2008 - Dec 2008My position here involved researching, designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise-level EPM/BI software for use by mid-sized and large corporations, using .Net, C#, VB 6.0, and Excel VBA. After being acquired, the legacy application upon which I had been working was deprecated into defect-only sustaining mode in favor of another incumbent application already owned by SAP.I retrained in the new product, then participated in gap analysis, sizing and costing exercises, and migration toolkit designs to help our existing customer base migrate to the new replacement application.Finally, I was selected and retained as one of a handful of key resources to develop training materials and to train a group of developers in Shanghai, China who were to take over sustaining engineering on our old product. This training took the form of creating documents and making presentations via GoToMeetings, culminating in a 10-day trip to Shanghai where I trained the Chinese engineers directly. Senior Software EngineerBusiness Objects Aug 2005 - Jan 2008Researching, designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise-level EPM/BI software for use by mid-sized and large corporations, using .Net, C#, VB 6.0, and Excel VBA.The primary desktop client solution included a significant integration with and use of the full range of automation and calculation capabilities of Excel, transferring data to and from both persistent but also often transient workbooks, along with permanently storing that data, querying and manipulating against several releases of Oracle and SQL Server database back ends.In addition, there were also a number of lighter-weight, browser-based and stand-alone, detached clients which consumed both the persistent workbooks and the persistent data stores of this application.Business Objects was acquired by SAP in January 2008.

Software EngineerSrc Software Jul 2003 - Aug 2005Developing, and maintaining budgeting and planning software for use by mid-sized corporations, using VB 6.0, Excel VBA, and C++.Took on role as change agent promoting the concept of daily automated builds. Placed all source code and components under SCM (SourceSafe) for first time. Gathered information on all manual processes used in product creation, documented each step, then helped place these within an automated build process. Despite meeting initial management reluctance, the project succeeded while freeing up significant time from a QA engineer. At the end of the project I was personally thanked by the CTO for being persistent.Responsible for ongoing research, design, and development of many major new product features, all while providing major cleanup and refactoring of 15 year-old "spaghetti" legacy code, including massive removal of global variables which were causing major transient server-side defects.SRC Software was acquired by Business Objects in August 2005. -

Most previous responsibilities continued, but more emphasis was placed in assisting the ongoing maintenance of the core product.Responsible for creating several auxiliary products which were added to the product suite, including a new product written in VB 6.0 to provide integration between our persisted data and Microsoft Visio to meet an otherwise deal-breaking certification requirement for Strategy Mapping. Created UI forms supporting form resizing and control repositioning as well as localization support, including on-the-fly font switching to support Japanese, Designed new file formats to persist the information used to facilitate this data transfer to various shapes in Visio, which were created programmatically as needed via VBA/COM integration to the Visio object model. This strategy mapping application was very well received in the marketplace. -

As a result of my work, the query became easily reproduced within code to any desired number of levels, and resulted in dramatic reductions in running time.ABC Technologies was acquired by SAS Institute in October 2001. -
