As new work opportunities are presented to the organization through RFIs and RFPs, Rusty collaborates with Business Development and Operations to determine the contract strategy, approach, and to organize the internal project stakeholders and client deliverables for each bid. As a Senior Manager of the Proposal Team, Rusty reviews new opportunities as they come in house and assigns the projects to team members (Proposal Coordinators) based on the current work load and schedule of the group. He leads and coordinates work activities necessary to produce proposals, qualifications, organizational content and graphics. He serves a team of Proposal Coordinators who prepare and administer proposal activities, processes, timelines, deliverables, and reviews. Charlotte, North Carolina Area

As the Equipment Coordinator & Superintendent for the site, Rusty managed all construction equipment requests, reservations, purchase orders, and deliveries for a multi-million-dollar industrial construction project (approx. $100MM). This Beneficial Ash project was located in Salisbury, North Carolina adjacent to Duke Energy's Buck Power Steam Station. Working in a new geographic and operational territory, Rusty had to build and manage relationships with all national and local construction equipment vendors, operations managers, and technicians to support the project. He scheduled deliveries, departures, inspections, maintenance and repairs for all cranes, heavy equipment, light equipment, trucks, tools, and specialty tools on site. He also organized the purchase of parts and consumables, for all crafts, equipment and tools. To support the project, Rusty worked closely with various stakeholders at the construction site, including: the Project Manager, Superintendents (General Field, Civil Concrete, Dirt, Survey, Electrical & Instrumentation, Structural, Crane & Rigging, Pipe, Millwright), buyers, warehouse, craft planners, schedulers, cost representatives, safety and environmental team members, operators, and mechanics. Rusty created and routinely updated an equipment forecast (approx. $8MM) for the lifecycle of the project, managing and evaluating the total and monthly rental costs. Based off this analysis, he would recommend and implement appropriate strategies to save cost and adhere to the allotted budgets. While working a strategic plan, he would also be called to respond immediately to requests from the field as well as verbal or written inquiries regarding status of equipment or cost information. For each craft superintendent, he would provide advisory services on equipment: job performance, options, accessibility, cost, and limitations. For the project, he developed and maintained record systems for all equipment requests, utilization, and maintenance.

For three years, Rusty managed the college recruitment efforts, nationwide, for the Zachry Group Corporate Internship Program. He helped build and maintain Zachry’s university relationships through coordinating career fairs, information sessions, campus visits, externships, and other outreach opportunities. As the manager of the program, Rusty created and delivered presentations for all intern program stakeholders, including classrooms of prospective students, company leadership, hosting managers, and summer interns. Operationally, he produced job descriptions and posted open requisitions on job sites and through career centers. He followed, managed, and updated Zachry's Monster based applicant tracking system (ATS). He reviewed resumes, conducted interviews, and served as the applicants main point of contact throughout the entire hiring process. He also led final hiring decisions. He administered reference checks, extended offer letters, and initiated onboarding. He planned the logistics for the entire summer internship program, which included coordinating and facilitating three-day Orientation and Closing Programs at the Zachry Corporate Office (San Antonio) for all interns nationwide. He produced an Intern Manual which included resources, assignments, and a detailed schedule for the summer. He managed project site visits, volunteer events, social events, and intern travel. Strategically, Rusty facilitated individual career discussions with each intern, to identify those who may be a good long-term fit. He organized training for the interns, to learn the business and expose different departments and opportunities across the enterprise. He assisted with organizing individual, team, and interdisciplinary projects for the summer. He provided nationwide staffing recommendations to key leaders across the organization. He coordinated intern placements for full-time and return internship offers. He helped smooth transitions from student life to early-career life.

As a new college graduate, Rusty began his career with Zachry Group, an Engineering, Procurement, & Construction company based out of San Antonio Texas. To start his career, he provided strategic and administrative support for the Corporate Recruiting and Sourcing teams. He reviewed employment applications, and conducted initial telephone interviews to screen candidates. He scheduled meetings and interviews with hiring managers and recruiters, and served as the primary source of communication between Zachry hiring managers and job applicants. He followed, managed, and updated the Monster based applicant tracking system (ATS) and administered reference checks through a data application, SkillSurvey. He coordinated the on-site interview process, gathered and reported interview feedback, and provided recommendations for hire.

Houston, Texas Area

In his final semester of college, Rusty earned a full-time internship opportunity with StarTex Software, an EHS (Environmental, Health, & Safety) software company based out of Houston, Texas. StarTex provides offshore drilling companies with EHS Insight, a software to report and maintain OSHA standards. StarTex clients include: Diamond Offshore Drilling, Noble, Rowan, Modec, Hercules, Stryker, and others. While enrolled full-time at Texas A&M University, Rusty managed a full time work schedule. He created organizational training documents and updated onboarding materials for new employees. He used WordPress, a personal publishing software system, to create training articles and new documentation for client projects. He planned and scheduled meetings with project team members, and interviewed the team to learn project processes. As a working student, he organized and presented a research project measuring the productivity of past projects based on lines of code, unique client complexities, development durations, revenue, and other key performance indicators. He advanced his technical skills by using WordPress, Microsoft Office, Camtasia, email, and other technology regularly. He participated in company meetings and special projects as part of a project team, and assisted with the launch of a new software product.

While attending Texas A&M University in College Station, Rusty returned to San Antonio each summer and winter break to work for a private General Contractor, John Derochers. As an assistant to the General Contractor, Rusty learned about many phases of residential construction, demolition, and renovation to improve the appearance of home interiors and exteriors, and ultimately increase the property values of these homes and apartment complexes. Project phases that Rusty worked on included: Concrete, Framing, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Sheetrock, Paint & Landscape. He also managed the purchasing and inventory of all materials and consumables. Each summer and winter break, Rusty developed skills of multitasking, time management and working independently while achieving full competency over a range of construction jobs and tasks.
