About Ruth Angus, Phd
I am an Assistant Curator and Professor of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History, an Associate Research Scientist at the Flatiron Institute's Center for Computational Astrophysics, and an Adjunct Professor of Astronomy at Columbia University.I run a research lab at the American Museum of Natural History, where my team focuses on studying the origins and evolution of stars and extra-solar planets in our Galaxy. I specialize in measuring the ages of stars via their rotation rates, which I use to create a chronology of nearby planetary systems, revealing the evolutionary pathways of exoplanets. I apply statistical data analysis and machine learning methods to large data sets: observations of millions of stars from NASA and ESA space telescopes. As an Assistant Curator, part of my job involves disseminating scientific research to public audiences. I am involved with several science communication programs, including a number of collaborations between scientists and artists.I graduate with a Masters in Physics from the University of Southampton in 2012, then got a PhD (Dphil) in Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. I was a Simons Junior Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University from 2016-2018 before starting my position at the AMNH and Flatiron Institute in 2018.
