"The ability to learn is the key to enable human adaptability to continual technology driven change" My research and scholarship at UTS involves working with trans-disciplinary teams and industry partners in prototyping and developing learning eco-systems to support and enhance the development of resilient agency in individuals and teams, aligned with the development of organisational, technical and community resilience. As a core member of the Learning Emergence Partnership, I am working with business models that encourage innovation, evolution and collaboration between academia, industry, public policy and enterprise. The Learning Journey Platform and associated Learning Power Apps is one of the outcomes of this work, partnering with digital professionals from financial services industries and co-design user partners from around the world.

As an originator of a learning analytic designed to assess a person’s learning power in order to turn diagnosis into strategies for self-directed change I now focus on processes of learning, adaptation and feedback in complex social systems and the development of resilience in individuals, organsiations and communities. I was Co-Investigator in the International Centre for Infrastructure Futures (ICIF) that brought together stakeholders involved in renewing the UK’s infrastructure. Through ICIF we developed a generic learning journey design framework for creating innovative, performance based business models with learning and resilient agency at the hub of stakeholder driven, improvement and transformation. I'm now working on the application of these ideas in prototypes of the learning framework with industry partners in the UK and abroad.

Working from the Graduate School of Education, The Centre for Systems Learning and Leadership brought together educational, business and community leaders with researchers to engage in inter-disciplinary research and development using complexity theory as a tool for understanding and designing learning systems. We aimed to develop visible, critiquable re-presentations of educational ecosystems and to develop and evaluate tools designed for socio-technical systems modelling and ICT for sensemaking, asking how effectively they provide insight for educational leaders. We were intrigued by the possibility of developing a pattern language for identifying and reflecting on findings within and across different contexts. We shared a participatory, engaged social philosophy at the heart of which is the idea of empowerment for individuals, organsations and communities as part of complex adaptive systems.
