Ruth has particular experience in formative and evaluative research with children, youth and families, especially adolescent girls and young women who are at risk and/or in contexts of vulnerability and have experienced gender-based violence. She has led research with street-connected and working children, child-headed households and young carers and children affected by conflict and sexual and gender-based violence. Her research has explored topics such as children and young people’s lived experiences of adolescence, agency, resilience, gender empowerment, relationships, education, health and wellbeing and social and cultural norms. Ruth has worked with community-based organisations, NGOs and social enterprises, international NGOs, national governments, the United Nations and private sector trusts and foundations in locations around the globe. Ruth previously worked at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research on a programme of work with UNICEF to develop community-based security approaches centred around the needs of adolescent girls after the Maoist conflict in the Eastern Terai Region of Nepal. Ruth is an experienced presenter and facilitator at conferences and workshops. She has particular expertise in research training and capacity building, including organisation wide support, the development of training materials and one-to-one research. She has developed the ‘Local Ethics’ approach for designing bespoke research ethics with local stakeholders to ensure ethics guidance is appropriately situated in locally relevant social and cultural meanings and practices. Ruth has written book chapters and journal articles related to ethnographic approaches, peer research methodologies, evidence-based programming and children and young people’s agency. She co-edited a special issue of the journal ‘Children’s Geographies’ on children and young people’s agency in Africa. She has been involved in four short documentary films about her research.
