I supervise and coordinate research to develop an environmentally friendly and sustainably sourced seed coating.

I am building Kiel's first Aquaponic system. Aquaponic is a technique that combines the cultivation of fish and plants in a closed system. The fish fertilize the plants while the plants clean the water for the fish. With no pesticides, no antibiotics, and less than 10% of the water used compared to land-based cultivation of vegetables, Aquaponics is becoming a serious alternative to current industrial food production. In a pilot project I build a small-scale, low-tech Aquaponic system in the Botanical Garden to 1) acquire and share theoretical and practical knowledge, 2) educate children in subjects such as sustainability, basic principles of plant and fish biology, ecological food production, etc., and 3) lay a cornerstone for larger-scale projects in the future.

I was doing a PhD about biodiversity of free-living marine nematodes. Particularly I was interested in the causes and consequences of biodiversity, using marine nematodes as a model community.
