Hi This is my updated artist statement:I am interested in ways of depicting the human form. I am working on various projects exploring people’s relationship to the Internet. My drawings and paintings capture the fragments of faces we see behind a computer or mobile phone screen and the delicate ballet of fingers produced when hands encircle mobile phones. I aim to capture people’s total absorption in this electronic world.I also explore how people represent themselves on social media sites and the contrast between the illusion of intimacy that these sites create and the reality of it actually being a world- wide public arena. There is a contrast between a face and a life presented to that electronic world and how we, the viewer, interpret that image. I have incorporated text in my pictures to reflect the words associated with the Internet and how a new meanings have developed around some words. Background words which, if looked at closely, are very telling and poignant; find friend, home, delete, lifeline. There is a liminal space between the pressing or not, of ‘Send’ and ‘Enter’.Working semi abstract I use a variety of media to depict the contrast between the hard, sterile surface of the screen and the variety of the soft delicate textures produced by paint, pencil and charcoal. I work on a variety of surfaces; computer and phone screens, board and paper and I combine media within individual paintings. They are an exploration of the organic versus inorganic, human versus machine.
