In the early days Ruth kept our team accountable, ensuring we had the right people in key roles and really tested us on our methodology and approach. She always shared her concerns but gave us a chance to take action and adjust. Ruth was a breath of fresh air in our projects context as she was always driving to for improvement and seeking new ways of working. She was not happy to accept things for the way they were done before, and she was happy to challenge the norm. The reason I really believe Ruth was so successful is because she is incredibly functional strong - finance is her background - but yet she is able to step out of the detail and see the broader picture. She can converse with the teams on the specific details, but then discuss and negotiate with senior directors at the appropriate level for that discussion. This was a real strength. She was always keen to be data driven and let the data lead her conversation. Other key qualities for Ruth were her leadership - she led a large team of various skills and experience. She was a real mentor and coach to junior team members and you could see how they respected her and she was a great peer to those more experienced. She never shirked responsibility and took accountability for tasks proactively - which was very refreshing. Finally, her strength of conviction and adherence to principles was something that stood her apart and benefited our program. She established the principles for the finance team and drove those to establish our finance transformation and global template. She led large and meaningful change. The real skill though was she continued to evolve that approach and adjust that as the situation changed. Towards the end she was able to soften her approach and provide more tailored solutions.
