The long term goals of my research group is to activate endogenous stem cells to promote the regeneration of the damaged brain after stroke or in neurodegenerative diseases. My group has also shown that manipulation of mitochondrial dynamics has a major impact on neuronal survival after injury. Our most recent studies have shown that defects in mitochondrial function or aberrant changes in mitochondrial shape result in the depletion of adult neural stem cells, leading to defects in learning and memory. These findings have major implications in our understanding of cognitive defects associated with neurodegenerative diseases and neuronal injury as well as regenerative medicine.I have published extensively in top-tier journals, including Cell Stem Cell, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Communication, EMBO, and PNAS. Two paper arising from my laboratory have been cited by Faculty of 1000. I'm a Senior Editor for the Journal of Neuroscience, a Review Editor for Frontiers of Neuroscience and Associate Editor for Biology Direct and have served on several review panels including CIHR, CFI, Ontario Mental Health Foundation, HSFO, Alberta Heritage Foundation, and the Stem Cell Network. I'm currently funded through CIHR, HSFO, CFI, Brain Canada, Krembil Foundation, Parkinson’s Research Consortium and Ontario Brain Institute.
